...Apple would be one company to think of.

Based on Apple's actions with Final Cut Pro X, where they seemed to be backing away from the professional media customer base, toward a more simplified product, I think that is unlikely. Adobe picked up quite a lot of defecting Final Cut Pro professional users, according to reports.

CS6 will do just fine for a long time, and by then something else will be there or Adobe will come to their senses. I'd sub right now if I was left with working software once I stop paying, but I can't see signing up for anything for life.
I use PS less and less as is, LR and plug ins work better for me in most cases.

Leave me with working software with the option to resub down the road, even if it costs an upgrade "penalty" and I'll sign up the day that happens.

We'll see if another company picks up the ball and launches the photo editing application of the next twenty years. Apple would be one company to think of.

That would be fine for the 8% of the world's population that uses Apple hardware. :)

OnOne Photosuite 8, soon to be released (current version 7 is very good too) is a very good alternative and then there's Capture One.

I went from PS to Paint Shop Pro X5 earlier this year and have been very impressed.

Me too! I do 100% of my photo editing now with DPP and Corel.

That's what I use, too.

I also added Aftershot Pro because it is often dirt cheap, but I haven't cozied up to it as much as I thought I would. But I hate Lightroom, too, so maybe it is just me.

I really like Aftershot. I got for about $40 from Amazon. It's quite powerful. I used it a lot when I first got it. Lately, I've gone back to doing most stuff in DPP and Paintshop. Aftershoot has come in handy though on a few photos that I didn't expose correctly. I also like that it doesn't make to setup a "catalogue" like lightroom wanted to do. I can simply open/edit photos anywhere on any of my drives. Anyway, it's an absolute bargain for $40.

Cs6 probably has more than most need. If you own this and use dng converter going fwd it may be enough

^^^ This... the latest couple of generations of disc based software will be more than adequate for many of us for years to come, even with new cameras that aren't supported natively. It's extremely simple to use a DNG converter as you import your photos, then your software works exactly as it did in the past.

So unless you just "need" a new feature of a new version of the software, simply keeping what you already have is always an option. That, along with upgrading Lightroom until it goes subscription only, is what I'll be doing.

Still using LR 3.3 and PS CS4 here. The trial of LR 5 ran slower than my cash flow, so I didn't jump to upgrade when the final version came out. Looking at all of this Adobe BS, I don't think I shall. Already looking into CaptureOne Pro.

Photoshop is all I need for photo editing. I don't even have to upgrade to CS6. I will be staying with CS5 until Adobe demands me to upgrade.

I've been using Photoshop since version 4.0 came out. I've also used Elements 6, 7, 8 and 11. I now use CS6.1 for Mac with the complete set of OnOne plug-ins, the complete Nik set of plug-ins and two of the Topaz plug-ins, DeNoise and Clarity. I live on Social Security and cannot afford a monthly service fee, considering I already paid for the boxed version of Photoshop.
