Hey,

I am usually a photographer for nightlife/events, but have decided to possibly try and get some video footage together.

I own a 5D mk III, 50mm f1.8, 17-40mm f4 and a 70-200mm f2.8.

I have just has the pleasure of getting a deal on the creative cloud software on the
cheap so downloaded and had a go with adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects.

As far as I am aware, after reading up how to get the best video, I have used a cinema preset on the 5DIII - it removed the sharpening, downed the contrast and saturation.
I then used Premier Pro to add in contrast, colour correction and sharpening.
AE to reduce grain/noise.

Here is quick sample of my camera at ISO 320 f4 with the 17-40mm strapped on, is this the sort of quality I should be getting?:

Ohh like you just starting with my 5DIII [never got into video before too].

Can I be honest - I would be really, really disappointed with that quality.
Yes the after looks much better exposure and colour wise.

I need to experiment and then post some results, but I had a Sony A77 SLT camera and the vide on that was far superior in lack of grain, clarity and sharpness.

I do hope mine does better, I am really quite worried. :( :(

Sorry to be negative and not being mean, just honestly constructive comments [after all we are both in the same boat with new 5D3's here]

I do hope it is a setting issue.
Canon CPS told me to set it at F8 as that is the sensors sweet spot for video.

I will do some tests and follow up.

was that 1920x 1080p what FPS?
Was it compressed at ALLi?

Well I used the 70-200mm f2.8 USM II but feel a prime would be higher quality.

The before image uses a cinema profile setting....kills the contrast, sharpness and the saturation in order to keep as much data as possible (in the darks and highlights).

The after was just using basic tools like the colour corrector, contrast and sharpness in Adobe premiere.

I have seen some stunning footage taken with 5D mk IIIs and was more wondering how you can get such high quality...things like shutter speed, lens and editing must all play a part I feel.

I shot at 24FPS, 1/50th shutter and ALL-I 1920x1080.
I feel that maybe with the shot of the trees swaying, I should have adopted a higher shutter speed to make it more crisp and combat any motion blur...

No, keep your shutter at 180 degrees. If you pan, keep it slow to avoid juddering. If there is motion there will be motion blur, but it's video not still photography. High shutter speeds result in a strobing effect. Re the grading, I might have brought the density down some more and upped the contrast a bit, but the change would have been so small it might just be a difference in our monitors. Also, I tend to prefer things dark.

I meant switch to say x720p @ 50FPS @ 1/100s? Would that have given a more crispy and clean looking image?

I was told faster shutter speeds = more jerky motion videos. [Seemed the wrong way round to me - but what do I know!]
No a move to 720p would in my opinion be a real downgrade.
The only thing I would change is to shoot at F8 [per Canons advice]

I will take some videos on Wednesday and report back. Sorry but my video lights arrived smashed lol!

As You say I have seen some alleged vids produced by the 5D3 and they were very good.
You have ALLI on so don't understand.
I was told the 70-200F2,8 L Mk II was one of the best IQ's around.
I would try that, then we can do a real comparison.
If mine are much better happy to email them to you directly.

One thing if you exported them from Adobe Premiere some older versions like mine only export DV H.264 not the one I the camera that conversion could be the problem. So what Adobe and version no. are you using?

I have the most up to date cloud versions; I got it reduced price.

I was shooting quite low Fstops except for the outside (I do not own any good ND filters). The 70-200mm II is fantastic IQ except a good prime will always top it!

I exported the clips at max bitrate, .h264

I feel it may be my PP that doesnt give the such crisp video as some I have seen...

I looked up a little about the 180 rule and such, but the rule has/can be broken say to produce the more crisp/staccato effect seen in movies like the Saving Private Ryan beach scene and the Gladiator fight scenes (where you can actually see the individual dust grains).
