Hey I like to do street photography but find my 50mm and 35mm a bit narrow on my 60D camera.

What would you recommend as a good prime walk around lens for street shooting? Is there a 24mm lens? Or a 20 or something?

I think the 60D isn't a 1:1 camera as far as lenses go...so a 50mm prime on a 60D is really like a 60mm...something like that.

thanks

Canon makes both 20 and 24mm lenses. Your camera has a 1.6x crop factor so a 20mm lens would have the same field of view as a 32mm lens on a full frame sensor. A 50mm lens on your camera has the same FOV as an 80mm lens on full frame.

Ok I see. Thanks.

35mm is quite a traditional street lens isn't it? So maybe a 24mm lens would be a reasonable idea...

What do you reckon?

The 18-55 IS is a good lens and can be had for under $100 online. The 18-135 is also good but a little bit more expensive, not unreasonable though. 18-135 should cover anything and everything you need as a walkabout lens. Or the 28-105 USM II is very good, about $150-$200 online. The 28-135 is slightly better IQ but also a little more expensive.

I don't want any kind of zoom lens...just a prime lens...a big part of it is being a bit less obtrusive...I have the 18-135...but it's a bazooka...I am looking for a compact prime lens.

Think I'll investigate some 24mm lenses

There are 2 primes @ 24mm. 24LII which goes for $1.5k or the 24 f2.8 IS which costs $700.

Tbh if you are dedicated to do streets, I'd rather buy a Fuji x100s for less than a 24LII....great retro styling, tiny compact body and gives a 35mm FoV.

Wow that sure is a nice looking camera.

Hmmm...already invested so much into a 60D, 11-22mm, 50mm, 35mm and 100mm macro

But...damn...that's a nice camera...

The other option is ef 28 1.8 usm - it is much smaller and cheaper than 24 1.4 L. Maybe not up to the same built and picture quality but still very capable.

Canon do 20mm, 24mm, 28mm primes.

I too have a 60D and I've tried the older versions of the 24mm f/2.8 and the 28mm f/2.8 as you can get them off eBay for about £150 or less. The newer versions have IS and USM but cost over £500 each!!
The older versions are ok, just have noisy AF that's all.
There is a 28mm f/1.8 USM but I've never tried it.
The 20mm is large, but I've never tied it.

If you want primes because they're small and light then remember that the 18-55 "kit" lens is about 200g and sticks out by 70mm.
Now lets look at those prime specs:
The EF 20 f/2.8 is 400g and 70 mm.
The EF 24 f/2.8 is 270g and 50 mm.
The EF 24 f/2.8 IS USM is 280g and 55 mm.
The EF 28 f/1.8 USM is 310g and 55 mm.
The EF 28 f/2.8 is 190g and 45 mm.
The EF 28 f/2.8 IS USM is 260g and 50 mm.

So they're all just as big (and heavier) than the EFS 18-55mm

If you want primes because they're faster and better in low light then another option is the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 nonVC.
They go for under £200 on eBay.
You get all the f/2.8 primes in one lens, and it's only 440g.
It does stick out by 85mm though.

For street id say go for the 28mm 1.8. You most likely will find yourself wanting a faster lens for street (thats why i bought my 50mm 1.2)

Not a prime, but as good as one. sigma 18-35 f1.8 is what you want. Or go for a wider 10-22.

24mm, but at that price, you may be better off getting a cheap 5Dc to use your 35 as a true 35.

Voigtlander 20mm or 28mm EF mount lenses. They are just as small as Canon's 40mm. They are manual focus only, but learn to zone focus (if you don't already know how). Then you don't have to wait for the camera to autofocus at all and can take shots instantaneously.

Not really sure about needing faster lenses as most good street shots tend to be done stopped down to f8 or more. Higher ISO is the key to getting fast enough shutter speeds.

I like subject separation for my street photography. I typically shoot at f/1.4 - f/2.8. I prefer my results wider open over having everything in focus.
