Can anyone tell me what this means? I am confirmed for a shoot of a well known artist in September, but was told to "keep out of eyeline", I really don't know what that means

Does that mean I'm not allowed to put any eyeliner on? Or to keep out of the view the artist?

ask them, but to me it sounds like "stay out of my sight"

a rather strange request, unless it's Robert Fripp with his manic anti photo obsession, LOL

Not him, but a well known female artist, wonder how they are going to enforce that?

my only experience with this was shooting Springsteen a few years ago...it was just me and the house shooter, and we were shooting from the barrier between the GA pit and the rest of the stadium floor (probably ~150' from stage or so).

just before the third song we got word from security there that we couldn't shoot from the center of the area. apparently bruce got irked seeing a lens and set the wheels in motion for security to move us out to the sides. at least that's my guess.

If this is during a performance, I am assuming they don't want you in front of them being a distraction which could affect their performance. A seasoned professional shouldn't be distracted that way, but I could see how it might affect some people.

I recently shot the dress rehearsal of "Guys and Dolls" at Theatre Clwyd for some publicity images for them to hang in the foyer. I was told that I was free to move around and shoot, but to try and avoid distracting the players. I changed positions during those short periods when they close the curtains to alter the set, and generally tried not to be obvious in my actions.
