The 100-400 II stabilization is GOLD. I use mode one on the lens, and center point only. Also, I usually only fire 1-2 shots at a time, keeping my index on the shutter button/lightpresses! I stick to ISO100-500, so that helps a ton!

I rented a 400 mm without IS, didn't know how much IS helped until I didn't have it. If I rent a longer lens again, probably be that lens you have.

Posting this same question elsewhere on POTN, but thought I'd throw it in here as food for thought -

I'm looking to compliment my 70D's 17-55 and 70-300L with an ultrawide zoom for landscape and architecture photos (no astro work).

Canon 10-22
Canon 10-18
Tokina 11-20

The two Canons can be had for almost the same price used, but the Tokina is almost double the price. I like things about all three lenses and am probably over thinking this, but I always like hearing other's opinions :)

So if you were me, which would you buy?

I have the Canon 10-22 and like it, haven't used it too much yet, but seems acceptably sharp. I borrowed a Tokina 11-16, really sharp, but limited range, if that 11-20 was as sharp it would be a great choice. Between the two Canon lenses you list, I'd go with the 10-22 for the wider range.

One other thing I recently discovered with the help of another birder:

Silent Shutter = Works WONDERS around skittish birds, and I've noticed a lot less blurry photos in multiple shot sequences.

Up in the mountains last weekend. (BTW, great stuff Marksec, makes that 70D look like a hell of a camera)

THanks!

You know what's funny: I actually get better results on the 70d than the 5dIV for bird photos. So don't believe the hype! I think unless you have $$$$ for a 500 F4 or bigger, then just stick with a 70d/80d/7dII, but my opinion will likely fall into the minority in most circles. Glass > Camera body.

Love this B/W, and I'm not usually impressed with most B/W work online, so NICE job!

Thanks. Winter scenes are nearly monochrome already, so converting to black and white and emphasizing shadows and highlights often works well.

Definitely lens over body (although I periodically get a little bug to buy a full frame, resisted so far).

I like to think I "retired" from landscapes = a lot of time/$ saved/less frustration after doing 'em for 15+ years.

You def have an edge if you're into winter scapes as you won't be lined up next to 25+ other photographers!

You could do a budget system on a 5dIII/16-35f4

Not been feeling the love with the camera for a good while now, but today I did grab a few, 3 of which were of a dronefly on the laurel.

Can't decide if I am giving up the hobby or not yet, but I might be. In the meantime, I could add a few pics here and there...
