Problem with a 300 prime is so many times you are just to close to the animals to get a good shot. That's why I went with the 70-300L. Worked out really well. Don't get hung up with 600mm shots...there are so many photo ops when you're right on top of the animals. Many times I was shooting at 70-100mm.

Of course there are times when you may want that 600mm reach. :D

To continue on with the discussion about which lens, the Canon 100-400 is up.
I took this shot in the Badlands a couple of years ago. At F8 with a bit of processing, this
lens can help you get some real nice shots.

IMAGE: http://davev.smugmug.com/WildLife/Badlands-2010/i-P8qGqZX/0/X3/IMG_5319%20sharp%20tail-XL.jpg

This one happened because the lens is light and can be handled easily.
IMAGE: http://davev.smugmug.com/WildLife/The-Best/i-NxXp8Db/0/O/IMG_8111%20ducks%20topaz.jpg

All that being said, I think all of the lenses are pretty darn good, and if you stay calm
and can think out your shot, or get lucky like me now and then, all 3 of the lenses (100-400, 300 F2.8, or 28-300)
can give you some great shots.

Still testing 70D low light performance, trying squeeze as much as possible :)

Absolute darkness, only fire lights up the scene, ISO 3200:

No doubt. I was just relating my experience in Africa where frankly reach with my 70-300L was more than adequate. We were so close to the animals that it was perfect. In fact as I mentioned earlier sometimes we were too close and 300mm was way too much lens. Were there a few instances when I could have used more reach? Sure. But overall the trade off of carrying around a heavy lens for three weeks wasn't worth it to me. JMO.

Agree, 70-300 range is pretty decent on crop, necessarity of carrying large heavy lens and risk some back injuries isn´t worth it :)

i would trade IQ for 1.8x extender.

Thank you!
First picture is RAW and some NR tweaking, 70D has much more friendly noise than 600D, so it was pretty easy to keep lot of details intact.

Absolute darkness is always bad, frankly i firstly underestimated my 70D and i refused to shot, because there was a second photographer with 5D mark II, i had virtually no hope to be able to make some usable photos, that´s why i was pretty impressed i was actually able to capture some decent moments. It certainly is not a fullframe, but it can do the job pretty well with some help of PS.

Second image is also RAW, but with no NR. Only cropped and aligned.

Those low light images are perfectly fine in my world! Well done.

I'm loving my 70D and haven't even begun to explore the video side of things. I'm hoping to get some work in with it when we get our new puppy in January.

Can anyone share how can you tell if you are in focus when you're in AI servo and High repeated shutters mode. (Oh, I'm mean viewing through the viewfinder and not on the Live view)? There is no beep or red-light indicator.

I only see the Black square box and in a bright day environment, I can't tell if the focus is front focusing or not?
Many thanks.

I'm with burnet44 for slightly different reasons.

I keep running the two scenarios over and over in my mind. A 70D plus either a 400mm f/4.6 or a 300mm f/4 with a 1.4x.... or a 7D II with my current lenses and a long wait.

I have enough saved for the 70D now, plus enough for the Canon grip and Kirk L bracket. Either lens would have to wait until April.

Decisions, decisions. I can feel my 7D II resolve weakening.

At AI Servo and high FPS there is nothing you can do... Can you correct manually at 1/5 of a second? The AF will front/back focus the same way in AI Servo or One Shot. In AI Servo the question is did it acquire the target?

Never had a problem with the 60D...

Sorry for the link, but this is a dedicated 70D thread. You can go back and forth in that album to see how well the AF performs

If the lens works with the TC in the crop, get the lens now! The 60D can handle most situations...

Drew Carter ditched his 7D in favor of his 60D and glass...

You never get a beep or light in AI Servo. By defualt the 70D is set to a balanced focus priority, meaning it will try to get focus before releasing the shutter in AI Servo mode to a point. If it can't get a focus lock after a short time it will try to take a shot anyway. You can hear the shutter speed slow if it is having trouble locking focus. You can adjust this in the focus settings in the custom functions so it either will always wait for a focus lock before firing, or you can tell it you always want it to shoot at full speed or as soon as you press the shutter if you set it to shutter priority vs focus priority. I leave it on the balanced setting.
