Davev- thanks, just returned from 3 days backpacking in the Big South Fork. I appreciate all the 'glass' for thought.
The 28-300 gets here tomorrow, will pop onto the 70D and head to the zoo for emulation.

Were you in a public place or on airport property?

On a public road.

For these shots we are not on the property. There's another spot our aviation photography club uses that is on the grounds of KPHX. I regularly shoot from about half a dozen airports. At several of the smaller airports we are allowed right next to the runway. Never been hassled but I am obsessive about following the rules as is everyone in the club. Relationships have been set up between the club and the airport officials which is probably the biggest reason for our freedom to shoot.

I sold mine a few days after I took the eagle pics. Those were my proofs that the lens worked.
I think you'll have to caress some sharpness out of your shots.
If the weight doesn't bother you, and if you can shoot just a bit closed down, maybe
a 1/3 or 2/3's of a stop, the results are pretty good.

Although in my other post I was basically at the end of a runway on a public road,
I was once about 5 miles away, taking shots of egrets and ducks, and was asked
by a cop if I was taking pictures of the planes.
Forget the fact that my camera is pointed downward, even if I was taking pics of planes,
what am I going to see at that range?

These guys are nuts around here.

The birds don't like me enough to let me get that close :) Of course yesterday was spent dodging tornadoes, which made me sad cuz there was a GREAT shot I could have taken when I noticed a poor squirrel in a tree hanging on for dear life. Sirens were sounding so it wasn't time to go switch lenses and mess around :)

I only appreciated my Tamron 70-300 VC after I bought the 70D and calibrated this lens to -9. Now it is beautiful!

Worth to note that the lens went to Tamron three times while I had the XSi and then the 60D, and all three times came back with a note that there was nothing wrong with it. The last note was signed by the CS director.

I cannot emphasize how awesome lens calibration is. I had a T2i before the 70D. When I first got the 70D about 2 weeks ago, I was taking horribly soft photos and had serious buyer's remorse. I sat down this past weekend and calibrated all my lenses and my last photo shoot had tack sharp photos.

I had about -9 on my the T end of my 17-55.

The LensRental.com Canon 28-300mm came in today....admittedly I don't know how to 'test' except to shoot and see if I like. Here is one (it's a local zoo so shooting through a fence):

What method did you use to calibrate?
