What method did you use to calibrate?

I mostly followed the Dot-Tune method (external link) with the Bob Atkins chart linked in that post. However, on certain lenses, I had some trouble and it seemed like the focus confirmation dot would flicker no matter what. For those, I would just play around with the focus adjustment and then do a max zoom on the photo in the LCD to see if it was in focus. That way, it's more trial and error though.

Dot-Tune--thanks for that Beerwolf!
I did notice that you and Lbsimon ended up with -9 on two different lenses. Coincidence? I read in a book somewhere back in time that there are no coincidences.....

I tried many methods - the one that Canon suggested, tethered, and a couple of others. Still not happy. I had a problem in the beginning with Dot-Tune as it tries to find at what point the green dot will blink. With the Tamron mine did not blink at all. I thought I was doing something wrong, spent a lot of time on it, and quit. And then, trying to do another lens I realized that the Tamron was so far off that it was way outside of the range. Once I understood that, the rest was a matter of an hour to calibrate all seven lenses that I have.

And no, there are no coincidences. We both ended up with -9, and we both are members of POTN. Too much of a coincidence, if you ask me! :-)

Yeah, it's just coincidental. I think I had -3 on my 50 1.4, -9 on the Telephoto 17-55 & -2 on the wide end, and I forget what I got on my other few lenses. Most of the time, it was in the -4 to +1 range. The 55mm end of the 17-55 was by far the most off and sure enough, that's the one I was using when I was crying about my soft photos.

Just noticed that Dot-tune is built into my version of Magic Lantern for the 6D----won't be long before the ML team ports what they can to the 70D since it is growing in popularity.
I did read that adequate/bright lighting was critical for the Dot-tune method, I'll keep that in mind.

Here's a challenge for you.

70D, Sigma 120-300 o.s., Canon 2x tc, Canon 1.4x tc, handheld while using live view to get autofocus.
Yes I did a bit of editing for this. Mostly trying to smooth out some of the noise in the darker areas.

1/320, F8, iso 200, @ 900mm.

Playing with the ability to shoot five images and also checking 55 - 250: was wondering if I needed to attempt the micro adjustment thing for this lens. On the tripod it seems ok?

five shot HDR.

Great HDR Rose. As mentioned prior, I don't like the surrealistic ones. You latest is very realistic. Clouds are the first to suffer in HDR, these look nice (and 3D). To me the goal in HDR is to render what I saw...only the photographer can judge that.

While you were doing HDR I was again testing the rental 28-300mm. So far I like, mainly because I can hand hold it for a goodly amount of time. Here's the latest test on the crop 70D (tomorrow I'll put in on the 6D):

Nice, maybe still a little "gritty" :)

I think it's technically 840mm.
So the challenge is shooting the moon at 840mm hand held, w/ live view?
Once we have a clear night with a moon, I'll try it :)

Just one note Dave, Forum rules allow max picture size of 1024 pixels. The mods will resize the larger ones if they see it, but you'll also get a message from them too if it repeats.

The St Georges Shopping Centre has got the Christmas decorations in place already, and that includes Santa's Train.

I thought it best to get permission to take the photo, as in some shopping centres, the security staff can get quite pushy and stop you (on the grounds that you are casing the joint as a terrorist!).
