Hi everyone - this is a general inquiry in case someone has ideas about how photograph hands. A friend who is an osteopath is setting up a website and asked me to photograph her hands while she is engaged in a "hold" during a treatment.

I have Googled ...... and most of the ideas are about creative hand photography, whereas this is for a specific purpose. I'm guessing I need to go for good depth of field, so shoot about f/8 or maybe slightly more. One suggestion was to use a 50mm lens which I do have. I also wondered about the Tamron 90 macro, which I haven't used much, but depth of field is much shallower from memory.

Her table is right by a window, so I'm hoping we might be able to turn it around to suit the shots/hand position, and I do have a flash, so guess I could bounce that off the ceiling from the camera. No external triggers etc yet. I'm assuming I need to watch for shadows - what other pointers/ideas can people give?

A1 servo, multi shot, flexi zone focus - I'm not so good at this yet.
This gull was bathing in the creek - a poor photo, but I liked the manic expression on it's face!

Okay - I think you mentioned that before. That will mean upping the iso, even in the bright light we have at this time of year. How high have you found iso without too much noise? Actually it's hard to believe it could be sharper for NZ$530 odd!

I'm really glad I took your advice and bought the lens - it is definitely superior to the kit 55 - 250

I do find it difficult with a moving target - I suppose you learn to anticipate the birds movements with watching them.

The other thing I really like about it, is the way the subject pops out of the background when the focus is right on.

Thanks JV - it's interesting, as I nearly didn't take the shot, as thought - ho hum, another static gull shot.

But anyway I did take it, and saw the terrific shadow when reviewing the shots.

don´t be afraid upping the ISO, ISO up to 3200 with good light and exposure is perfectly usable!
according EXIF, you had 1/1600 shutter speed, which could be overkill. Gulls are not that fast and most of the time 1/800 is sufficient

I tend to use manual mode with 1/800- 1/1200 (fast adjustment with upper wheel), constant f/7.1 and autoiso enabled (even up to 6400), which is great 99% time.

I found out that for example pigeons are much faster than gulls, i need 1/2000 to get perfectly sharp image.

I used aperture to get good shutter speed and depth of field, but didn't check the shots. I think I'll make a note ... for myself. SO much to learn Will try your setting next time I'm out. Thanks so much.

You might just try window light as your primary light source, and a reflector to fill in the shadow side. It might work really well - I've always it difficult to make flash look natural, but that is probably because of my lack of experience with it.

Hmmm - same problems with flash. Don't have any reflectors though. It looks as though it's going to be a very sunny day, so hopefully there'll be enough light from the window. Thanks.

Use your pop up flash to trigger that YN560 off camera and try that Tammy 90mm to get in on the hands. Really bright light from the window may be harsh and cast dark shadows. You can have someone hold the off camera flash in various positions and angles until you get what you like.
