Tried a little experiment tonight.

Two photos taken at the top end of the Sigma 150-500 zoom lens. No optical stabilisation used, tripod mounted, live view, manual focus, remote release, used on both images.

The first is at 500mm, the second at 500mm plus Sigma's 1.4x EX extender.

Both these were taken at night, at ISO 500 in AV mode, giving a 4 second and a 6 second exposure, at f/6.3 and f/9 (I should have done the extender shot first and matched apertures really, but I didn't think of it).

Interesting to see the sharpness using the live view and my eyes on each, and also the difference in sharpness at different apertures (i.e. caused by the 1.4x) on the brickwork of the gate post.

The focal point I used was the number 18 on the door of the house.

On each image, no noise reduction and no sharpening has been used, the only adjustments were to try and get the whites similar, because they were different, though I failed! (I assume due to the glass in the extender having an effect in some way).

Effective focal length - 800mm:

IMAGE: http://www.canon-fodder-forums.com/photopost/data/8/108018xNo_zoom12.jpg

Effective focal length with extender - 1120mm (I think):

IMAGE: http://www.canon-fodder-forums.com/photopost/data/8/108018x112.jpg

I did it because I wanted to try something - no science involved, just curiosity...

Use your pop up flash to trigger that YN560 off camera and try that Tammy 90mm to get in on the hands. Really bright light from the window may be harsh and cast dark shadows. You can have someone hold the off camera flash in various positions and angles until you get what you like.
Post results!

Unfortunately my flash needs triggers, I didn't realise this until after I had bought it - wish I had bought the other model .... but never mind. The model which works with the pop up will be my next purchase, but not for a while ... sometime in winter, and I'll get a couple of triggers as well, and try to learn flash. Try to being the operative word!

Okay - the best laid plans .... my friend was in a hurry, and I like to fiddle ..... the treatment table was too heavy to move for the angle for the diffuse light coming in from the window .... the flash, which I planned to bounce off the pale walls didn't work ..... I think because I used wifi to trigger the shutter from my smart phone. So I'm not particularly happy with my efforts, but my friend is. Here's a few anyway.

I used the nifty fifty, would have done a couple of series - one with this lens, and another with the Tamron 90 macro, but as I say my friend was on a tight time frame. Pretty much all f/8, supposed to be sweet spot for this lens, iso 100, on a tripod, with a flash that didn't flash, light from a window.

Just for fun I did some crops and B&W conversions.

Sorry to flood the forum - another couple. Maybe it's the wine I've had while doing the processing, but I'm thinking these aren't totally bad :-)

I've emailed my friend to say that we need a repeat shoot .....

Just checked that second shot - not too good with such a crop. Definitely need to do another shoot.

picked up the 10-22mm and was going to try it out for a few days. my suggestion is to spend a little more and get the 17-40mm. the 10-22mm works great for Indoor Photography and maybe landscapes but i found it was too soft. I'm going to micro Adjust it today and see what happens. Also, I get the 300 f4L today too. Hope its a sharp copy.

Rosey, I think your photos came out very well. The B&W conversions are bang on!

For flash, I believe the Yongnuo 568II is the closest to the Canon 430 EXII (and the cheapest compatible out there) which will work very well without triggers and you can have full control of the flash from your camera.

If you plan to get sophisticated triggers (like the YN622C or equivalent) then you can go down on the capabilities of the flash to one with adjustable power (Manual).

If you plan for 3 flashes as your ultimate goal, I think the triggers might be cheaper.

These are dumb triggers... You have to set the flash power manually at the flash... inside a softbox... eight feet high... no thanks!

I started OCF before the inexpensive YN622C came out, so I chose to buy 2 430 EXII and control them from the camera menu of the 60D. I can set different power levels, while the camera is on the tripod and click the shutter.

Lazy much? I have a Softbox 7 feet up and have no problem changing the settings, Manual is better, You control the light that way and i'm pretty sure she doesn't have a 8 Feet tall Softbox. Shes looking for a simple setup. Those triggers are for Simple situations.

You don't understand how the sofisticated triggers are used, do you?

If you are in love doing chinese firedrills up and down the softbox be my guest...

The dumb triggers are not worth the savings...

Thanks - I only posted the best of the bad bunch, but actually they're not as bad as I thought they might be :-)

Yes - I'm looking a bit more carefully into flash, and at some stage will get one that is triggered by the pop up or camera. I'm assuming I can do that and still use the existing one with triggers once I buy them - and learn how to use them!
