Sep 02, 2013 21:53 | #350 Wow, y'all are reminding me just how much I can't do BIF shots. Even with the 100-400l. Fastest thing I've got in the Canon line is a Sigma 70-200 2.8........and as I wrote that I became overcome with melancholy and thought of my favorite piece of glass (ever), a Minolta 200mmG prime--but that's a different forum ![]() What about Bigma? too slow I'd bet for the type of BIF shots above. Then there is the body...6D too slow but the 70D is obviously passing mustard. The 70-300L is usually on some kind of rebate program and can be found for 1300-1400 depending on the deal at the time. The lens is fantastic. Cameras: 7D2, S100

Are you all saying the 70-300L IS is better for BIF than the 70-200 2.8 IS II ?? I'm under the impression you'd want the fastest lens for BIF, though seeing most are shot in bright light. As you said, most BIF are shot in good light. The 70-300L is crazy sharp wide open. When shooting birds reach is more important in most cases than wide open speed, and those extra 100mm come in handy there. The 70-300L is lighter and more compact than the 70-200 2.8, so it handles handheld better. It has an amazing and fast AF system along with a top notch image stabilizer. Cameras: 7D2, S100

mccamli Goldmember More info | I'm a big fan of the 70-300L too. I'd like it to be wider but I'm not willing to pay the price in terms of bulk and weight.

Immaculens creeped by the TF.... More info | and, wide open through the zoom range - you run the risk of not getting the wide depth of field needed to get wing-tips on both side in focusblur-free. You can have a shutter of 2500 but if your DOF is not wide enough for various birds - it means out of focus wing times often.

Sep 03, 2013 12:16 | #360 Immaculens wrote in post #16262735 well Keyan, myself, and surely others would vouch for the 70-300L IS. The 100-400L IS although old - is still very popular... And I'd be one of the "others", it's a fabulous lens on any body! 6D & 7D mark II - Canon 16-35 f/4 IS L, Canon 24-70 f/2.8 L, Canon 24-105 f/4 L IS, Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS II L, Canon 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 L IS II, Canon 50mm f/1.8 STM, Canon 85 f/1.8, Canon 100 f/2.8 USM macro, Canon EF 1.4x III
