Well I LOVE the Moon and goose....cheating? I don't care, looks incredible.
70D for $650, well that certainly help me pay for the mod just done on the T2i.
Shinksma thanks for the etymology...I admit I know nothing about insects-just enjoy the challenge of a good shot-but hey, why not start learning about them? The spider in question was very very patient.

Immaculens is that the $1500 model or the $2500 ??
Fastest thing I've got in the Canon line is a Sigma 70-200 2.8........and as I wrote that I became overcome with melancholy and thought of my favorite piece of glass (ever), a Minolta 200mmG prime--but that's a different forum :)
What about Bigma? too slow I'd bet for the type of BIF shots above.
Then there is the body...6D too slow but the 70D is obviously passing mustard.

Just noticed and agreed Iowa2's warblers (?) don't look extended at all. What would we do without good light!

Wow, y'all are reminding me just how much I can't do BIF shots. Even with the 100-400l. :p

Really, though, that just means I need to spend more time on my patio freaking out the neighbors in nearby high-rises as I "hunt" the seagulls that like to fly between the buildings. They'd probably be good practice.

Another outing with the 18-135 kit lens tonight.

Meglet, love the string of pearls across the water.
Me too on the BIFs...but there is a nearby lake with eagles residing, maybe someday.

The 70-300L is usually on some kind of rebate program and can be found for 1300-1400 depending on the deal at the time. The lens is fantastic.

not familiar with a $2500 70-300L unless you may be referring to the 28-300L.
A friend of mine has it and uses it a lot with his 5D3. I would never get it, myself.

Immaculens, it was the Canon 70-200L f/2.8 IS II, my bad.
Are you all saying the 70-300L IS is better for BIF than the 70-200 2.8 IS II ??
I'm under the impression you'd want the fastest lens for BIF, though seeing most are shot in bright light.

As you said, most BIF are shot in good light. The 70-300L is crazy sharp wide open. When shooting birds reach is more important in most cases than wide open speed, and those extra 100mm come in handy there. The 70-300L is lighter and more compact than the 70-200 2.8, so it handles handheld better. It has an amazing and fast AF system along with a top notch image stabilizer.

I really, really, really like the lens if you can't tell. You can tell it was made for high density crop sensor cameras, the correction profile for it was already loaded into the 70D!

Come to think about it you'd be panning to match up with the birds flight speed so lens speed necessity not so much.
OK I'm studying it but of course this one came up in the searches:

I'm a big fan of the 70-300L too. I'd like it to be wider but I'm not willing to pay the price in terms of bulk and weight.

As Keyan said, it's sharp wide open, it focusses really quickly and it's got great IS. It's a lens I'm willing to carry on my camera most of the time. It seldom seems to get too heavy or awkward to carry...I know I couldn't say the same for the 70-200.

It should be a great match for the 70D.

and, wide open through the zoom range - you run the risk of not getting the wide depth of field needed to get wing-tips on both side in focusblur-free. You can have a shutter of 2500 but if your DOF is not wide enough for various birds - it means out of focus wing times often.

the 70-300 IS non-L (before my L) was sharpest at f/9 and accounts for me getting great blur-free focussed shots because of the wide f/9 DOF. I'd still get bokeh if the subject was close enough and the background was far enough.

as far as weigh goes, get rid of the Canon strap on your body and get a real strap, no matter what lens you use. Real straps can seemingly lesson the weight on your neck substantially. That means longer shooting.

well Keyan, myself, and surely others would vouch for the 70-300L IS.
The 100-400L IS although old - is still very popular...

And I'd be one of the "others", it's a fabulous lens on any body!
