Will, would mind sharing what settings you ended up selecting? I set mine according to Busch's book on the 70D. I'm at work so I don't have them handy.

I don't mind at all because I hope others might share too.

Firstly is a setting not related to shooting BIF or action - Red menu 1: Release shutter without card - OFF! I need to know if I don't have a card in there ;)

My settings for shooting action (birds in flight, wildlife, pets, sports, etc)

Getting the typical out of the way: Raw, Manual Mode, AI Servo, Drive is H Continuous, Auto ISO

Evaluative Metering, although sometimes Spot

Shutter 1/800 and faster, based on bird or subject. I typically like 1/1250
Aperture F/6.3 or 7.1 - helps get wing tips in focus

Back-button focus: AF-On button is my Auto focus. I changed the shutter button to only meter.

Lens - Stabilizer mode 1 (have never had much luck with mode 2 which is meant for panning... perhaps I will have better luck with the 70D vs 60D)

Focus Mode: Centre Point AF.
I've read what 7D BIF and wildlife shooters use and they usually seem to use Centre point AF or expanded centre. I also use Centre Point AF because many of my subjects are so far away that I don't trust ZONE to track them.

Red Menu 3: Auto ISO - I have it expanded to 12800.... better to have noise than motion blur...

Red Menu 4 - all NR turned off. I will apply in Lightroom if needed

C. Fn II: Autofocus. I 'mainly' went with settings based in a 5D mk3 tutorial explanations. I have scoured google for 70D BIF settings and there are FEW mentions or guidance...

1. Tracking sensitivity: Locked on (fully left) This sets priority on locking focus before shutter release
2. #1 (centre)
3. Focus (fully right)
4. Centre

7. Left (Centre Point focus) and Middle (Centre Zone)

These are my settings having had the 70D for 6 days  and of course I may tweak this or that.

Hope this might help. If you don't shoot action much - you could set up all the above and then save it to your custom C 1 button for a quick switch.

Ok you action guys - share if you have other suggestions!

nice!

i put my two cents too :

1) IS(VC) stabilization is better to turn off when using fast shutter speeds, it holds AF system for short period of time until it kicks in and can ruin the first picture (Out of focus) - 70-300L and 70-200 and higher-class lenses probably don´t suffer with this issue that much, but my tammy 70-300 VC does.

2) I recommend using AUTO ISO and tune these values accordingly to current avaiable light as changing during the day. It´s not about noise anymore, but color reproduction and dynamic range, which suffers a lot and sometimes camera metering can raise the ISO to absurd values just because of dark background. During bright daylight i use AUTO ISO to 400-800, otherwise i put 3200ISO or 6400ISO if needed. 12800ISO is usable, but i set it rather manually, because IQ suffers a lot comparing to ISO 6400.

3) about AF : i use 1st picture shutter/balanced priority, because sometimes camera just can´t decide if the object is locked and blocks the shutter (precious moments are gone) I use for 1st picture balanced priority and for 2nd/3rd pictures focus priority, because the risk of having 1st OOF is lower than having shutter locked during precious moments.

Thanks for chiming in!
Regarding use of IS/VR/RC (1 below) I know many feel similar as you do and of course one should experiment for best results. For myself, I find that past 250mm - my subject jumps around my VF too much making it too difficult to lock AF on. Its the main reason I have not purchased the EF 400mm L non-IS

For #2 below - excellent point about dark background throwing off ISO... just this morning I was photographing my parent's black cat using centre focus and evaluative metering... shutter 100... auto ISO wanted 12800....
If it was a lighter colour cat with dark background I would try spot metering

3 below ~ I certainly have lots of experimenting to do. If AF decides to be wonky, I just press and reactive it, which was the only real option with the 60D... I'll try as you suggest below and compare.

Thanks!

Nice one thx for showing us inside Hong Kong ,funny to see that nobody is looking into
the camera (pedestrians)

A lot of times I was on quite a distance zooming a lot. That extra range with the 18-135 lens really comes in handy :)
But also, Hong Kong is like a camera metropolis so everyone is probably used to camera nerds running aroung, hehe

Even with 70-200 f/2.8, i´am gonna keep my tammy, it´s excellent lens IMHO.
