Rosie,

I like your edit. There is so much to learn about post processing. The photograph I posted earlier with the edit was shot with a CPL. That's how I got the reflections in the water... by rotating the CPL to eliminate glare.

A good photograph can be made better with the right processing. That's the problem for me: I can't always get it "right". Your edit improved the sky quite a bit, in my opinion, and that makes the photograph more pleasant. It's difficult for me to get my landscapes to draw me in. You have done that with many of your landscape photographs, including the most recent.

So many great entries recently. Paul, your macro is excellent as always, as is bvsteyn's flower. Laurts, I love that water sunset (or sunrise) shot. Great color. Rosey, I like the edit too, FWIW, but I agree you could probably take it a bit further to make it 'pop' more.

...and Oscar, that is one heck of a first post; excellent star trails. Welcome!

The biggest problem I have with CPLs is losing 1-1.5 f stop. Unless there is bright sunlight sometimes I can't get the right setting I need. When I was in Africa and needed higher shutter speeds the CPL was killing my ability to keep the shutter speed high enough. So I took it off. :p

With the 70D ? What lens did you use? Couldn't you compensate on higher ISO.

70-300L

Yes I could have bumped the ISO but wanted best quality possible. At the time I was shooting T4i. Short most at 100 or 200 ISO. For normal stuff it wouldn't have been a problem but I needed to keep shutter speed at 500+. So made choices. Photos came our great but a few times the CPL might have been nice. When you're in Africa there isn't a lot of time to be messing with things like that unless you want to take a chance of missing the shot.

I like that shot Kim, great reflection, and I like water and reflections. I may get a CPL for the sigma 10 - 20, once I learn how to use it, but I'm also keen to get a decent ND filter, as I enjoy long exposures. I have a set of real cheap ND filters which I sometimes play with, but they do give a magenta colour cast. Sometimes I can get rid of most of it in processing.

I read somewhere about focusing one third into the shot for landscapes, and mostly that's where I do focus for landscape. Recently I've been experimenting more with processing - being a bit braver in Lightroom mainly, and playing in HSL when I remember, to bring up colours in skies, and trees etc. Someone here taught me - not sure who now though.

Hi Rosey, I learned a lot about Lightroom from watching the pod casts from this guy. http://photoserge.com (external link) Then click on News, then the top option Blog (EN)
He's French but does pod casts in English and is quite good.
He does tend to go a bit over the top with saturation some times, but does say that it is a personal choice.
For your landscapes you can do amazing things with the graduated filters in Lightroom instead of having to use your existing cheap ones or spending up big to get some new ones.
Anyway, worth a look.

Hey Rosey,
Since you're talking about polarizing, I assume what you are wanting to do is deepen the blue in the sky. I think almost anything you do in PP in that respect is going to result in the shaded areas of the clouds becoming too blue. I really like this scene. It's very peaceful!
Here's my take on it.

Firefox and Chrome on my PC and Safari on my iPad. Today seems to be better.

Chrome just gave me some grief so I popped open FF - no issue

my issues are when using Chrome. .... likely becaue I use all sorts of blocking extentions, like Ghostery, AdBlock Plus, etc

Righto - I'll take a look. I do use the filter tool, mainly on skies, but not that good at it yet :-)

That's interesting Ron - I might try a grey frame and see how it looks.
