Will,

You always do Zeus justice. As usual, he look regal.

The photo looks sharp as well.

I like the idea of posting SOOC and preferably with the 18-55 or 18-135 IS STM lens :) so I can compare rather than wonder how much PP was done.....

I'll see what I can do... ;)

I got the 18-55 STM for its wide 18mm (compared to my previous 24-105L) and its STM for video... and its short MFD for macro + ext. tubes... which I need to get going on

Thanks - this one did seem to be acceptably sharp... but the jury is still out... so more testing

Will,

Another note: when I was researching MFA, it turns out that every value represents 1/8th inch. So if the camera is focusing in front of the target by 5/8ths, you would need +5.. and if it's in back that much, -5. I'm not sure it's quite that scientific but one of the articles I read suggested it is. When I used Teamspeed's focus chart, it looked like I was 1/4" in front but took +5 to get the zero perfectly in focus. You do need that scale on a 45 degree angle to see what's what, at least, I did.

I don't like double-posting a bunch of photos, so here's a link - 70D at the 2014 MCAS (Marine Corps Air Service) Cherry Point Air Show. :)

I love all the pics and contributions to this thread and do not mean to detract...if I should start a specific thread, I can, just let me know.

The ones I linked to in that earlier post are all SOOC other than cropping, FWIW.

Beautiful shepherd portrait (hope I spelled shepherd right?). Seriously handsome dog.
I read somewhere than German Shepherds can have an IQ up there with a 7 year old human and I've known some pretty bright kids.....but I think some German Shepherds are smarter than some of my co-workers :)

Cooper just got to our house yesterday. I would welcome comments. I shot at f/8 but the back part of his face and chin are soft. I used my 70-300L. I seldom do close ups of anything but flowers so I could use advice: f/11?

Question.... It is possible that I was at the hairy edge of minimum focus distance. Would that do it? I might have answered my own question. I was way closer than 3.9 ft./1.2 meters.

Kim, when viewing your photo on flickr I saw two things: one is that you didn't use f8 but it is according to flickr f4 and the second thing is the shutter speed of 1/40. So I think the softness is caused by shooting handheld with a too slow shutter speed. Also you could have opened up you aperture more.

So I would advise you to not use micro adjustment for now..try to reshoot you beautiful cat with other setting before adjusting anything.

After viewing a lot of great BIF photos in this thread I wanted to shoot some myself. So a few weeks a go I was in my garden and did some bird shooting..

Some kind of BIF:

I know the standard for BIF shots are much higher in this topic, but I hope that they'll be better in time.. ;)

thanks everyone! any feedback, positive or negative improves my photos! :)

MedicineMan4040: thank you, i admire your macro work, i found out that my patience is not yet on decent level to shot this type of photography.

frozenframe: thank you! yes, this shot was taken by tamron 70-300 VC like most of my recent shots, it needs some practice, Tammy is hunting sometimes on longer focal length.

bvsteyn: i think 1/2000 is overkill for most of birds, i would rather stick to 1/1250 and raise your aperture to help your lens with focus and for even higher level of sharpness ;-)a

I didn't realize that the last one was with 1/2000 until you pointed it out.. of course it is too much. The other bird photo's I used 1/1000.. ;)

what about 70-300 nonL IS USM lens, are you happy with it? my friend plans to buy it (he don´t want any non-Canon lenses and L version is too expensive).

Yes, I'm happy with it although I'm planning to upgrade to the 70-300L in time. I've got this lens from the time i bought my 30D (in 2006) and at that time it was known as the best Canon non L telelens. I think your friend is going to like it a lot!
