Couple more with the Sigma 10 - 20. Must say I'm impressed with the sharpness so far, especially as these images both cropped. They probably didn't need such a wide angle but wanted to try the lens!

Great photos!!

Kim, when viewing your photo on flickr I saw two things: one is that you didn't use f8 but it is according to flickr f4 and the second thing is the shutter speed of 1/40. So I think the softness is caused by shooting handheld with a too slow shutter speed. Also you could have opened up you aperture more.

So I would advise you to not use micro adjustment for now..try to reshoot you beautiful cat with other setting before adjusting anything.

Thx, bvsteyn

I checked my camera when shooting and it said I was at f/8: odd. I'm going to have to check out why that photo says it was shot at f/4. I just checked Lightroom and sure enough, I shot at f/4. I looked at my camera when I was done shooting and it was set at f/8. I might have changed it mid stream.....

bvsteyn, thanks again for drawing my attention to it. I'll figure it out, I'm sure. Operator error, no doubt. ;)

OK. Operator error it is. I shot some photos early on at f/4, for some reason. The last ones are all at f/8.

On the other matter: I was shooting on a monopod so I thought I might get away with the slower shutter speed. What do you think is the slowest shutter speed I might be able to get away with on a monopod? I'm so used to shooting outside, I never have to worry about it because I'm usually above 1250 shutter speed. It's going to take me a while to learn how to be a decent inside photographer, or so it seems. ;)

It is hard to tell online so I want to be sure you know I'm not being defensive. I really appreciate your taking the time to help me. That leads me to the other question I posted: what happens to the photograph if you are at the minimum focusing distance of your lens and actually a few steps inside of it? Will the camera even be able to obtain focus or will you get something like I got above? In other words, is the blur just a case of my shooting at f/4 instead of f/8 or was I too close as well?

70-300L has 1.2 meters minimal focus distance, which is a lot, everything closer than 1.2meters will be out of focus.

your monopod will not help you in many cases (moving objects, even standing people requires at least 1/125 for eliminating motion blur) ... you should also turn off your IS (image stabilization), when your camera is mounted on monopod.

You can use f/4 instead of f/8 and boost your shutter speed instead to get steady shot.
70-300L is very expensive, but very sharp lens even on maximum aperture on all focal lengths.

Lukas,

Thanks. Our kitten is very photogenic. I have to learn how to capture him. I don't really want to use flash because of how it affects cats' eyes, even if bounced.

You are suggesting, if I am at the right distance with f/4, I'll get all of him in focus? We think his name is Cooper but we aren't sure: hence the use of "him". Anyway, Cooper is so tiny, I need to figure out a way to communicate this because kittens have this way of growing into cats when you aren't looking. This is why you might be able to sense my panic that I won't learn what I need to learn quickly enough. ;)

Thanks again. I'll open things up so I can get more light in at faster shutter speeds and if I have to, I'll up the ISO a notch or two. I can always switch to the 35 f/2 IS. I just love the photos from the 70-300L so much.

Your welcome, m8! I don't have to answer your last question because Lukas did that already for me. BTW I don't think you are being defensive!

I think that with the tips given the next photos of your kitten will be spot on! ;)
