Hello 70D owners-

I just upgraded from a 60D to a 70D last week, and so far I am really enjoying the new body. AF is better, movie recording is actually usable now, and I'm sure there are a host of other capabilities I haven't even discovered yet.

Hopefully this isn't too off-topic, but I was curious if anyone has determined a way to get more than three bracketed images out of a 70D for use with external HDR software like Photomatix. I have a Promote Control that I used with my 60D but with the on-board HDR of the 70D, I'm having a tough time justifying keeping the Promote. If I could figure out how to capture more than three images for HDR (for the infrequent times I want to do higher quality HDR) I could sell the Promote and free up some space in my gear bag. (The only other capability I use the Promote for is time-lapse, but I can get a $20 solution for that instead of $300).

I know the multiple exposure feature lets you take up to 9 shots, but you have to manually adjust the exposure and you cannot keep the original images, only the merged image.

Any solutions or suggestions for this? Would Magic Lantern work? (I don't know much about this, just have read a few posts mentioning extra capabilities you can to with ML.)

What lens did you use?

This was the 55-250 STM…pretty nice lens. And a heck of a reach on the APS-C.

And thanks for the kind words everyone!

Well sort of. Doesn't really address video. But I suppose turing it off for video as I have for still photos is probably the way to go.

Thanks.

Yes…off for video on a tripod. Some of the bigger lenses will detect being mounted to a tripod but the more common ones do not. The symptom you will see is skipping during a pan. The IS thinks the lens needs correction and fights the movement til it can't anymore and "pops" back into place.

Agreed the panning shots were hot! I need to try this someday. You are using slow shutter and trying to match the speed of your panning motion with the speed of the object in lens desire, correct? The effect is awesome.

Are you referring to C. Fn I-5

You may choose up to 7 shots.

I take seven shots for HDR, using the 2 second timer. Go to exposure compensation, set the f stops you want, and then just press the shutter. Have to enable multiple shots somewhere as well .... will try to remember where. When I remember I use the EOS app on my smart phone to trigger the shutter.

I haven't checked recently but last time I did ML wasn't ready for the 70D yet.

Re: 70D video.

Can anyone speak to how well the 70D's video format plays with Adobe Premier Pro? I'm expecting my second copy of the 70D tomorrow (first copy had the focus problem and was returned) and am very interested in taking some video with the kit lens. What format can I expect for the video files and what "preset" should I select in Premier Pro in order to begin editing.

Sorry if this has been asked before.

Thanks,

Kevin H.

I assked this question in the Digital Video forum but either nobody knows or they just haven't commented...

So when shooting video with the 70D on a tripod is it best to turn off IS? Or does it matter? I usually turn it off when shooting photos on a tripod.

I thought it was more a property of the lens than the camera?

Some lenses will automatically compensate IS for use on tripod, others wont.
see http://cpn.canon-europe.com …e_stabilization_lenses.do (external link)

Using IS with a tripod

When using certain early models of IS lenses with a tripod it was necessary to turn off the IS function. This is because of a phenomenon known as ‘Shake Return’. Shake Return occurs when the IS system tries to correct vibrations to which the system itself contributes. When the IS lens sits on a tripod, the IS detection gyros pick up any tiny vibrations or movement; these might be caused by the tripod being knocked, or the photographer adjusting a camera setting.

The IS system then swings into action to correct that movement. The movement of the IS lens group causes its own minute vibration, which is in turn detected by the movement sensor, which triggers another correction. This ‘feedback loop’ can continue endlessly, resulting in the addition of unwanted blur to images that would be sharper if the IS function was switched off.

Canon addressed the ‘feedback loop’ in later model IS lenses by introducing an algorithm to the IS detection system to automatically recognise when the lens is mounted to a tripod. When these lenses are mounted on a tripod and the shutter button is pressed halfway, the IS system kicks in and the image in the viewfinder can be seen to go through a very slow vertical shift for about one second.

If the shutter button remains depressed halfway the IS system detects the lack of motion and automatically switches into a special mode. In this mode IS detects and corrects for mirror slap and shutter movement at slow speeds, but not for ‘normal’ lens shake. There is no advantage to be gained in turning off the IS function or locking the mirror prior to exposure.

The early model lenses which do not have this automatic function and which should have IS turned off (ie lock the IS correction lens group in place) when mounted on a tripod include the following lenses:

EF28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM
EF75-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM
EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM
EF300mm f/4L IS USM

But it is a good question perhaps as to whether that changes when shooting video rather than stills.
