So I finally bought one of these things, so far I think it's a pretty cool camera. Here is something from yesterday. Had to blend this one with itself, if that makes sense.

A couple of globular springtails:

First one is on a leaf on one of the flowers in the garden (the autumnal agapanthus) and the second is in the surface of the wooden bird table:

Here's one from earlier today.

Not an easy shot. I had to balance myself at an awkward angle on a very narrow ledge of uneven rocks. It took at least 10 minutes just to secure my tripod. Temps were in the low 40's F and it was very windy. And as if that wasn't enough, the sun kept playing hide-and-seek while I was trying to determine the proper exposure.

Anyway, after going through all that, here's the result.

The Lunchtime Globby.

Most usually found by night, my globular springtails in the garden have had themselves an afternoon excursion around the lid of the garden waste bin. This one was the nearest one to me - the others were all just as mobile but nearer the centre of the bin and out of range.
All on the 100mm L IS, with 3 extension tubes.

In some of these (#3, #4, and #5) you can see the mouth part has extended downwards as the springtail eats or drinks from the surface.

I have been going backwards and forwards between one of these and a used 7d for a while but jumped in feet first... Will be retiring my 50d and playing with one of these by next Thursday, the joys of living in the middle of nowhere :(

http://www.the-digital-picture.com …News-Post.aspx?News=13984 (external link)

the 24-105L IS F/4 ($599!!!) is a superb lens (tests show it a good deal sharper than the newly released 24-105 STM IS... a lens I simply don't understand the existence of since the 18-135 STM IS *AND* the 24-105L f/4 IS are sharp & have great IS... ??)
