^^^Thanks Hokie....have to admit that I've fallen in love with the view from the apartment. The skies this summer were fantastic!

Dial in custom WB
went by a big camera store in Austin on my way to last nights game
they were having their own mini-convention
Sigma Nikon Canon Pentax Sony salesman were all there from corporate
I told the canon dude there is a way to set custom wb in live view
dude didnt know but he got a dude higher up the food chain to look at it
and we figured it out

hit live view button on top
hit Q button
then hit K on the menu If K dont come up hit WB on the screen and scroll to K
then hit info button on top left

you are now in live view custom WB
turn the back dial and look at live view
you can see the WB change
turn the dial until ya like it
and bazinga your done

I used it last night and it will make PP easier
I dare to say I wont have to custom wb many if any today
which helps my work flow because my flow is like traffic on I-35 SLOW lol

anyway I hope this helps everyone
if not thanks for reading boring posts

and they fixed my monopod and gave me a canon CPS card carrier and a big lens cloth
and I didnt spend a dime
saw some nice eye candy lol

anyone know if sigma is any good?
24-70 and the 120-300 looked VERY good
and a lot cheaper than canon

Wow that sounds super Burnett! That will certainly make life easier when shooting in crappy lighting, like HS gyms and swimming pools.
As for Sigma, I think the 120-300 is one of the sweetest lenses out there. I have to look away every time there is one for sale here or on FM otherwise I start thinking crazy thoughts like selling my 70-200 f2.8 II and Big Tammy to get the siggy and a TC.

I had one thought when looking at your photo. The camera is probably averaging out the exposure, so the lights are overexposed. Try underexposing by various amounts, maybe a full stop to start with. And your house is leaning quite a bit, something to correct in camera or in PP.

Tried a black and white conversion using Lightroom, which I've had for a week so not too experienced. Seemed more dramatic as B&W than the fairly muted color version.

you may consider upping the shadows slider to bring out the details in the foreground - or - use the gradient tool from the bottom upwards (upping the shadows) or - paint over the shadows areas

I did try to bring that darker foreground area up a bit with the shadow slider, but didn't have much success. Should try again I suppose, maybe with the adjustment brush.

Well, tried a thing or two, that's it for that picture, any changes I'm able to make just makes it look unnatural. Those sorts of scenes, that is, snowy peak (bright) and pine trees in shadows (dark) are tough to capture completely with the high dynamic range. Unless of course you use a filter or multiple exposures and then do some blending.

oh well, don't sweat it... if I can't up shadows in that type of shot then I might purposely vignette and remove foreground detail except for where you really want the viewers eye to go - and I think you accomplished that regardless.
