Thanks every body :)
Some thoughts on any 70D owners salivating over the 7Dii.
This past weekend 5 of us shot at Reelfoot Lake. I had great (for me) success with an eagle and a barred owl. I was shooting among
several cameras the 7Dii. My mentor, a guy who owned/ran a camera store for 23 years ~the type who can show me in 5 minutes what I've been trying
to get via forums (nothing against all here who've tried to help me, just right there in my face with hands on the machine works easier for me) and youtube~ anyway
he's using the 70D, we're shooting the same birds at the same time/ mostly same settings, same angle etc. etc. At the end of the day we all sit and
compare images...oh forgot, he's using the 100-400 mk 1 and i'm using the 100-400 mk 2. Guess what?
His images are better...some by not a lot and some simply because he's got 30 years experience. But they weren't better because of a faster frame rate
or even a vastly superior AF system....those things are in the 7Dii but they'll never supercede skill and knowledge.
At the end of the day I'm just more tired from toting a heavier camera.
Just stating the obvious I suppose :)

Great shots on the last couple of pages gang. MedicineMan...envious of that cardinal shot. I never seem to have much luck trying to get one of them.

I know it takes a lot of practice to get some results. It helps when you have a mentor, but trail and error helps too if you
can learn from your mistakes.
Things that i learned with BIF are wind direction, birds like to draft on the wind. Study their flight path and behavoir . And pick the most colourfull/beautifull bird of the pack
if there are more.
In februar i will go to one of the most famous bird photographers (Han Bouwmeester) of the Netherlands to learn the ins and outs. 8-)

What a baddass eagle!:)

Tell Han Bouwmeester he did amazing job capturing this!

Regarding 70D/7DmkII : I found AutoISO feature very limited without having metering linked to AF points as 1D-series has... I almost stopped using it (from ISO 800 and above)

I was amazed that NIKON D800 has metering linked to AF points, but 5DmkIII does not...

Thanks for sharing that. I don't salivate over the 7DII because I can't afford one, but if that itch ever comes it's good to know the grass is only a little greener, not necessarily that much greener. :)

Nicely said!

My mentor/friend who actually brought me to photography still uses old 1Ds MKII and his images are absolutely great. It´s all about skill and getting used to a certain camera. it is really necessary to experiment with all those features. I know people who are using best gear available (1DX or 5Dmk III), but don´t experiment or using fraction of those advanced features, still using old faction center point AF + recompose technique, never used AI SERVO or other AF points, never tweaked their settings, never tried to learn something new or change/improve their workflow.

I think it´s huge mistake:)

ain't that the truth. I'm trying all the features on the 70D and compare the results.
That's the fun part of photography.

It's just like driving a motorcycle some people want to go fast but only in a straight line, but the fun starts when the curves kick in.
Then you get one with your gear.
