I heard about the meteor shower too late. Then to top it off, my neighbor and his dumb dumpster fluid receptacle had a fight and he thought it was awesome to come outside..........

Needless to say, he has no more light bulbs on his back patio after this...

Before he turned the light on

I'm still getting my head around my new 70D but very impressed so far, a big leap forward from my old faithful 400D.

I took a lot of head shots at the local half marathon this weekend and was very impressed with the camera. Most were taken with a Sigma 70-200 f2.8 at high shutter speeds. My aim was to capture the different facial expressions in the race. Most shots were straight out of the camera as jpegs with some cropping.

Below are a few tasters but there's too many to post in the forum. If your interested you can view the full Flickr set here: http://www.flickr.com …g/sets/72157636263835773/ (external link)

So I just had my 2nd play with the 70D in a shop with the 70-300 USM IS.

Caveat: not knowing how to configure the AF beyond AI Servo and Center-Point focus (I messed with some Menu settings and maybe messed up my accuracy hopes) - and I was also shooting seagulls at a mere 640th/sec AND shooting at f/5.6 which is Decidedly Not A Sharp Aperture for this lens (I owned it before my 70-300L and usually shot at f/9 for sharpness)

Okay, bottom line. Coming from an XSi / 50D / 60D background - this 70D is Snappy Responsive! It was a Joy to shoot with! Knowing the lens as I do - the 70D was so responsive and AF so quick I was wearing a smile on my face the whole time - it was that Fun. I was astounded how much faster 7fps was vs the 60D 5.3... just amazing... summing up the responsiveness and fps - the 70D is Zesty

The View Finder is cleaner and slightly larger too.

I'll hope to bring in my 70-300L next time and hope that when I go outside again, I can find more gulls to shoot and post something worthy.

Waiting to buy this body in late winter will be a loooooooong wait!

I'm also getting familiar with my new 70D.
I had researched the heck out of this camera before I bought it so I knew what I was getting, the 70D is pretty much what I expected to be and lives up to the favorable reviews.

I am replacing my trusty 7D with the 70D. For many it may seem as a "downgrade" but I consider it as an upgrade. I like the robustness of the 7D, the IQ is fine but the 18mp sensor is getting a little bit old. And I also shoot videos occasionally and the improvements in video are huge.

I shot a few controlled test shots this morning and found that the 70D has better IQ if only by a tiny bit. The out-of-camera jpegs are a class better than my 7D's at the higher ISOs. The new jpeg processing and noise reduction works wonders. RAW files are better too, at higher ISOs the 70D has probably a 1/3 stop advantage in noise handling. That may not sound much, but it's the appearance and nature of the grain/noise that's different from the 7D's. Deep shadow noise is more uniform, less speckles that the 7D has. It is easier to clean up in post.

I've discovered that one of many sweet spots of this camera, if you are in a situation that you don't need to shoot RAW, is the medium size jpegs. It's roughly 9 mp, and those jpegs are wonderfully sharp and noise free. I know, I'm stating the obvious here, of course a 9mp image downsampled from 20.2 is nice and sharp and has less noise. But really, shooting at ISO 3200 at mJpeg is a breeze and the results are excellent, very close to what I would get after post processing a RAW image and downsampling it to 9mp. Of course it's still much better to shoot RAW, more flexibility in post, especially in terms of correcting white balance issues and pulling back highlights.

Just for the record, besides the 7D and 70D I also own a 6D which has fantastic IQ (and my wife has a T4i). So I have a wide variety of cameras to compare the 70D to. The 70D compliments the 6D nicely and the two cameras have a lot in common in terms of features, ergonomics, etc. Of course image quality is considerably better from the 6D, but the 70D is very nice too (the best of all Canon APS-C cameras, and I've owned many...).
It's going to be my main camera for wildlife (birds mainly), main camera for my real estate shots (mainly due to the wireless flash control like the 7D has), and second camera behind the 6D for my events jobs.

A few photos from today. Lenses used: Sigma 70-200 2.8 OS + 2x Sigma tc. Also Sigma 10-20 4-5.6

Most of these are cropped and processed from RAW.

your images have an interesting clean quality to them - almost a FF quality... the above osprey is a great specimen!

what program do you use for processing? I would normally have to raise shadows (increase fill-light) in Lightroom to get this effect. Great work ~

thanks.
I use Adobe Camera Raw an Photoshop CS6. I have a very good work process, you can find tons of my images over at the Sigma 120-300 2.8 OS thread. I worked out a pretty good process for noise reduction too, that's why my high ISO shots look pretty clean too.

EDIT: also, you can check out my Nature Shots Portfolio, link is in my signature. Most of my nature shots came from my 7D, which has almost identical set-up and AF system, so it's operation is very close to the 70D.

Hi Dan,

Like your first photo. Is that a marble? Kind of like an upside down fisheye lens!
