To echo one of the comments there, why the plastic mount? Give it a nice STM motor, but skimp on the mount? If the image quality is the same or better than the older version, I would consider selling mine for a newer one. (even with the plastic mount)

because weight and cost is a big selling point for this lens and plastic is good enough.

Loved my 55-250mm when I had one. This looks pretty good too. Can't wait to see the results.

looks sharper and better than the old 55-250IS. Probably going to cost more

Interesting - unlike the previous upgrade for this lens, which didn't change anything, this one appers to be a total remake, for 50$ more. Optical formula is completely different: 3 more elements, 2 more groups, rear focusing instead of front focusing (so front element doesn't rotate) FT MF in AF. MTF charts also look different - better overall at 55mm, mixed bug st 250mm (sharper at the center, softer in the mid-section).

6D (normal), 6D (full spectrum), Tamron 24-70 f2.8 VC, 135L, 70-200 f4L, 50mm f1.8 STM, Samyang 8mm fisheye, home studio, Fast Stacker

Even though the non-L 70-300 can be purchased mint/used for under $300, this upgrade to the 55-250 STM may finally offer a tough choice for crop owners.

Those who own full frame and crop might still prefer the longer, better built full frame non-L 70-300 as a consumer/lightweight option for both cameras. Ditto as to the Tamron.

I don't mind the plastic mount if it keeps costs down. It hasn't been an issue on the old 55-250 that I have. I've used my 55-250 quite a bit more than my 70-200 f/4 mainly due to it's better portability. I would love to upgrade to this one, but I'm not sure if the improvements are worth it.

I saw this in the product description: "With automatic panning detection" does the old one have this?

At the risk of sounding like a total newb, why would a lens like this need an STM motor? Is anyone really going to be doing video at a 250mm focal length?
