At the risk of sounding like a total newb, why would a lens like this need an STM motor? Is anyone really going to be doing video at a 250mm focal length?

For wildlife video ?

I have used mine several times filming softball games. Works quite well.

Quesiton is- will the IQ be good enough to keep one from saving up a little more cash and getting a used 70-200 f/4L non-IS for $450-$500?

Probabaly mostly will be sold in a bundle with Rebel's, so maybe it doesn't matter.

If experience is any guide, the IQ will be excellent and not a deal-breaker for most people. The "kit lens" family from Canon have been improved substantially in essentially every parameter in the last two years, and I would expect this lens would be no exception.

Part of the attraction of this lens is that it is small and lightweight, much smaller and lighter than the 70-200 lens you mentioned. These are often overriding considerations for those who want to carry a smaller, lighter kit. I certainly would not want to carry a 70-200 with my SL1. The 55-250 lens is a much more attractive option.

I think STM is the new default for non USM lenses.

Honestly what are they really going to do. They have a 70-300mm in USM already, eat into that profit margin? No. STM is the only option. If they go any closer to a 70-200mmL it will eat into that profit margin. They are in the business to make money, not provide us with cool new gadgets at a lower price. lol
From a filmmakers POV, the STM version is pretty much useless. Anything over 50mm for more than home movies is not even a discussion point. Price point @350, they will do ok but it's not anything to write home about.

Do you think they are really trying to target "filmmakers" with a kit telephoto?

There was already a thread for this. I am unsure as to why a separate thread was started.

Here is what I wrote over in the other thread:

I just got the email from B&H, announcing it. Here's the link to their page on it:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com …_55_250mm_f_4_5_6_is.html (external link)

I'd love to learn about how well it works on an APS-H sized sensor. If it will cast a large enough image circle to work well on a 1D Mark 4, then this could be quite a useful lens.

I am a bit confused by the following statement:

Greatly benefitting this lens' reach is the incorporation of image stabilization, which works to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to 3.5 shutter speed steps to support handheld use in low-light conditions.

3.5 stops? I thought that Canon's latest generation of Image Stabilization was good for 4 stops. I am wondering what generation of IS they put into this new lens, if not the most recent one.

"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

this thread was started before that other thread....

the previous version had 4 stops, maybe they did more testing, and decided it was really only 3.5 stops...

as for the aps-h...i think your main issue would be having to physically alter the mount...it's not like the 10-22mm where you can just pull the baffle out...

Well the old one vignettes pretty bad even on 1.6x, so I wouldn't get your hopes up.

Correct in post.

I do. But you can only correct so far. So, I'm guessing 1.3x crop is outside the realm of usefulness for this lens.

I got this announcement in my email that said "New EF lens". I read it and it's EF-S. I suppose all lenses are categorized under EF. Am I the only one a little annoyed that it didn't say "New EF-S lens"? I know it takes only a few seconds to read.

and i think somewhere in there it also used the wrong "its." ...just came back from japan and surprisingly very few speak english. so hey, still pretty good i say. :)

fyi, i did own the original lens and that lens when it was focused well was super sharp. unfortunately it focused so slowly that it missed a lot of shots in servo mode shooting things that moved. if this one focuses much faster it would be killer.

that said, i have the 70-300l now and it's always spot on for moving targets, but of course costs more and weighs a ton. the 55-250 is so light and small, and for the price is quite amazing.

For what I shoot, this focal length on a full frame would be awesome. There is nothing like it, save the (very) old 50-200L

On a crop, which it was made for, it is too similar to a 70-300 or a 100-400 . . . both of which frustrate me because they won't go wide enough.

It seems like the lenses Canon makes don't fit the range I need, so I am constantly having to carry two lenses or two bodies about, and while in the field I am constantly changing and switching them . . . which causes me to miss many shots. The "normal" focal lengths that seem to work great for everybody else don't fit my needs very well. I guess I just shoot differently than others.

Oh, if only this were an EF lens instead of an EF-S! Sure, it'd be double the weight and quadruple the price . . . but so, so worth it! Please, Canon, bring back the 50-200!
