OK so... is it worth upgrading a 55-250 II to the new 55-250 STM?

I would say for the new formula lenses, rotating front and STM for video it is a big upgrade from the v1. But for v2 it depends on your needs. My v1 lens is soft at the long end so I may flog my v1 off and get the new one instead of the 70-200mm F4 I was originally thinking about. The main advantage here is that it is lightweight (But not weather sealed or as rugged etc).

You pays your money.

The EF-S 55-250mm IS and 55-250mm IS II are virtually identical other than some very minor cosmetic differences. The STM has a lot of differences.

The only difference between the IS and IS II model is cosmetics. The optics and electronics are exactly the same.

Yeap I pulled the trigger. It now has the EOS-M adapter on it and its tossed in my car travel pack ( EOS-M, EF-M 22, 18-55 and now EF-S 55-250 STM) Works great and the test shots I took look nice. I think the AF is pretty fast enough too.

Super light compared to the rest of my DSLR kit. I won't be sad if canon releases a Native M in this range... This one is fine for as little as I will use it.
