I'm thinking about upgrading my ancient 100-300mm USM lens to the 70-300mm IS lens (the cheap one - NOT the L lens!).

I'd love to be able to play around with some RAW files from the 70-300 - ideally on a cropped-frame camera and at 300mm - to see how the image quality stacks up.

Has anyone got any that they're happy for me to download and play with?

Thanks.

I'd suggest you look at the thread dedicated to the 70-300 lens and ask there:

That would be great. Thanks. I use a 40D, so some samples from that would be ideal for comparison purposes.

Many thanks. Had a good look. I'm not seeing any dramatic improvement from my 100-300 USM lens. I'm sure the IS would be nice - but I can cope without it. I think I'll save my money for now.

No problem. I found i could get sharper shots by cropping my 70-200 than i could by shooting at 300mm with that lens.
It might not offer a drastic improvement over your old lens, but if you did have a need for IS i think its still a good choice, especially second hand, and you do gain more on the wide end. Up until about 220mm its a pretty good lens IMO.
