What is it about using film that makes it different? I never been able to tell.

Well, better dynamic range for one.

Perhaps it is to get that "old cozy" image quality of the first 3 Star Wars movies?

lol no, I have no idea. But I pray to all gods in the whole world that the new movies will be at least better than the latest trilogy.

A lot of new stuff is still shot on film, like Breaking Bad for instance.

So the green screen will now look greener? ;)

No, so the shadows won't be lost and highlights won't be blown. You know, like what happens with digital.

For a quite some time it doesn't, at least in slr photo-cameras. Must be something else.

This is not an extensive research, just a quick search:

Wikipedia says, "Film has an exposure range of approximately 14 stops, currently the highest in motion picture mediums."

I found digital video cameras with ability to reach up to 18 stops (and it may not be the limit).

Color negative films have about 14 stops of dynamic range, B&W 16 to 18, depending on the film. My 5D mark II has about 10 stops and my Fuji XE-1 has about 11 stops. The digital kings at the moment are the Nikon D600 and D800 with about 12 stops.

I don't think it is that many for 35mm color film for SLR cameras. I'm guessing around 7-stop latitude. Let's find out.

Nope. Kodak Portra has 14 stops of dynamic range. You're thinking of slide film, which is typically in the 7 to 8 stops of dynamic range (which is different than latitude).
