Any new updates for the 7D. I went on their site but didn't see any new info. Any behind-the-scenes info? I see that Alpha2 is out, but that's been out for some time.

This morning I did the autorun from the instructions in the link above. The instructions work and it includes a later version of ML Alpha 2 that supports the modules.

I've been using that as well, it's been working fine. Mostly I've been using the DualISO module. I can't remember what else it on there right now though.

How do you like dualISO. It looks like some are getting great results but it seems like a lot more effort on the processing side. Of course for moving subjects when there is no time for HDR it is a nice option to have.

I have been using the advanced bracketing and love how it goes above 30 seconds when needed in manual mode.

The RGB histogram is so much better and less intrusive than Canon's histograms. IIRC the RAW histogram is in this build which should be a plus for us RAW shooters as well.

Now I am interested in the autoETTR module. Maybe it will be a fit for wildlife.

Well I did like it. This morning the fresh batteries I put in yesterday were dead! Never had that with the non-boot version. Read something about this a while back so will have to research it. It is an Alpha after all.

I use the autoboot version also (v2.3.NEXT.2013Aug03.7D203) but never had my batteries run out quick.
Maybe forum members at ML can help you.

Thank you. It is good to know it isn't happening to everyone. All I could find in the forum so far was to remove the batteries. I believe the build I have is newer but the reports on the forum would have been an older build than you have.

Others have had issues due to the sleep timing. Will check that out too.

Thanks again.

The effort totally depends on what you use for raw conversion. Basically you just drag the .CR2 file onto an executable and it generates a .dng raw file. If your raw converter can read that, then you just process that instead of the CR2 file.

The only thing that takes a bit of time is setting up a preset for it, since the raw file will look different. In ACR I just adjusted exposure, highlight recovery and some of the camera calibrations to get close and save that as a preset. Then it's really not more time than a regular raw file.

If you have to convert 100's of CR2 files to .dng then that will take some time, but you can select all the CR2 file and drag them across in one go. The latest version of the code that converts them is very good now. In my latest test I concluded I'd use it for landscapes to retain detail in the shadows. Although you lose resolution, I find it hard to see. Obviously though, multiple exposures, if you can do them, will still give a better result. But as you allude to, you can use DualISO for things like sports in bright sunlight shooting at 1000s, which I find very useful. It can also be used with a flash if you set it up correctly.

Interesting. I seemed to have a problem with my 7D that it would drain the batteries if left on (which my 5DII does not do) before installing ML. Recently they drained when it was off as well with ML installed.

This can happen with the other cameras with the stable build if you remove the CF card too quickly after opening the card door (there are lots of warnings about this). With the 5DII the card light flashes a couple of seconds after opening the battery door, after which it is safe to remove the card without draining the battery. The 7D does not seem to do that, so it's harder to tell if this is the same issue, or if it is, when it is 'safe' to remove the card. Best to wait 3-5 seconds and see if that solves the issue.

I've heard rumors of the 7D being fried by ML has this been fixed?

Thanks for the info ejenner.

Sancho, it isn't listed here, but look around you may find an alpha or something. http://www.magiclantern.fm/downloads.html (external link)

Jonathan, haven't heard about frying 7Ds before.

Just FYI for those who have not tried ML on the 7D because the instructions were confusing... They have an installer now! Guess that means it is out of Alpha and into Beta.

From the first post.

Nightly compiled, you may try it: http://builds.magiclantern.fm/ (external link)
Thank you!

Installation:
1) Format the card from the camera.
2) Make sure you are running Canon firmware 2.0.3.
3) Copy ML files on the card and run Firmware Update.

Uninstallation:
1) Run Firmware Update from your ML card.
2) Follow the instructions.
