Here are some shots from a barrel race last night. I tried to get the white balance right... but it was hard to get them all to appear to have the same white balance. Probably because the light kept changing so fast. For shot info click on the image to see it on Flickr. Maybe I should have had a white balance card to use before each rider?

For these shots I used a 5D mark III and a Canon 70-200 2.8 IS II.

Whole set is here (external link)

I would crop these in closer and level the horizon. You've got great action here.

Nice shots, I shoot a lot of barrel racers, you will find your sweet spot. Shooting outside is way easier than inside an arena. It takes a lot of timing, I normally set up on #2 and get one shot there making the turn. If I can set up close to the ally I get one more shot on the sprint home.

Thanks for the input everyone :). Pyro, that first shot is actually what made me want to try shooting barrel racing. I saw it in the 70-200 thread and thought it was an amazing shot and wanted to give it a go lol.

They are racing again in 3 weeks, so I will give it another try then :)

Thanks, they are fun to shoot! I have four big runs to shoot in the next couple months. Sometimes I get in too close, with the 5D3 I need to give them a little more room and crop in post. All of my next shoots are indoor arenas, so that means more work.

Hang in there and have fun with it, I especially love the expressions!

I went to my first local event last Saturday. It was a blast! I learned a lot about horses and that kids have no fear on them.

Here is my first attempt at Gymkhana.

The one on the left is great :-D You´d never get the sense of the "bounce" in the horse if it was shot from the front

Most of the rodeos around my part of the world are unfortunately at night. Add the incredibly poor lighting in all the arenas and enter the AB's! It's challenging for sure but when you get it right it sure is rewarding! Here are a few from the last event.
