Hi guys,

My wife and I just bought the T5i (135mm kit) as an anniversary present for both of us. We are just normal, non-pro shutterbugs, but we tire of our little point-and-shooters.

We like the T5i, but as I quickly learn more, we are considering returning it and upgrading.

I see that the release of the 70D is very close, and priced at about $1550 with the same lens. For about $150 more than that, we can go with the 7d. The price is not the issue here. We just want the best purchase that future-proofs us for the foreseeable future.

I like the look of the 70D for a few reasons, but the biggest one is the on-board Wi-Fi. My wife takes a LOT of self-portraits, alone and with friends, and the ability of remote control with her iPhone is HUGE.

Can you please give us your opinions on what you guys would do in our situation? Or if there is another direction you would go, completely different from out ideas, lets hear it!

Thank you,
Michael

What I had 10 years ago (All gone, don't ask.):
70D, 100L macro, Tamron SP 24-70mm F/2.8 Di VC USD, Magic Lantern, 600ex-rt, FotoPro Mini5, Macbook Pro 15" i7.
What I am looking at now:
I am going to start with the 24-70 2.8 glass. Some R body to pair it with.

If money isn't the issue, I would get the 70d. The fact that you said your wife does a lot of self portraits makes the wifi control and swivel screen of the 70d are invaluable. The faster live view focusing the 70d will pay for itself immediately.

I got a T2i as my first DSLR and I found that I outgrew the Rebel quickly. An xxd model (70d) has more features that you will not outgrow very quickly.

I would return the T5i and get the T4i. They are very very similar, but at a better value.

Invest in glass when the lens you have does not do what you need.

Then in a year or 2, you can upgrade to another camera body.

Glass first, bodies second.

Edit: For wifi, just take the photo on the phone. No need for a DSLR to upload photos to social media.

I would skip the 7d. You will miss the swivel screen, it's a really nice feature to have.

If you don't have a problem spending the money for the 70d, I would get that instead of the T5i. I have the T4i and am considering upgrading for the better autofocus, wifi, and top lcd display.
