I have just purchased a Canon i9990 printer and am having dificulty finding Canon paper in this area. How critical is it to use canon paper in the i9990 printer? I can find othe papers to use.

Got excellent results with the Canon PR-101, but also with the Ilford Pearl (remembre to download the ICC profiles from their site) and, believe or not, with the glossy premium TDK (using the same profile of the PR-101)

Obviously the Canon Papers work wonderfull, and I have used Kodak's satan paper with really nice results, but I have been most impressed recently with Ilfords Legacy papers... very nice and they give detailed instuctions on calibration. I have used several house brands including costco and office max, but non had the color saturation I liked. Good news is pretty much anything works - but I regular now the Kodak premiums and Ilfords.

You probably should have asked this in the Post Processing and printing forum,
but first try this link on some tests I did about two years ago now.

And I will update it by saying Canon has better paper now, but I personally still prefer Ilford Classic Galerie Pearl.

I'll second the Ilford Galerie papers. They have been great to look at and do not fade even under harsh lighting conditions. I have my office for my day job (military ob/gyn) filled with photos thumbtacked to the wall with flourescent lights. The Canon photo pro papers fade tremendously within a month. The Ilford and the Printasia by Ilford papers have lasted more than a year without fading.

I agree that you have to download the ICC profile from Ilford to get it to look better.

Hi Les,
Canon PR101 is currently on a 2 for the price of one at various etailers - got stocked up recently ;-)a You have to look around as they are always changing their prices! Do a Google for " Canon PR101 and you should get there!

I looked at the Ilford Classic Pearl, but I can't find 8x10, only 8.5x11.

I suspect this is because the inkjet printers don't really handle a 8x10 size well, they are more designed up from computer printers using letter size (8.5x11 ). And any size is actually arbitrary and 8x10 as much as 8.5x11. They have at least 8.5x11, 11x17 and 13x19 paper which are all computer printer sizes (as opposed to photo print sizes)

For 8x10 I recommend printing on 8.5x11 paper and trimming down later on paper cutter (what I do when needed).

Ilford does make 8 X 10 in the pre-matted format. Unfortunately you can't (according to Ilford) print borderless on it, so it's pretty useless to me. As another poster already said, an 8 X 10 fits nicely on letter or A4, with enough room for a small border.
