So anyone who has got Pocket Wizards and the 600EX RT been able to compare their features and performance against each other? Or even know any good articles that compare them against each other.

The 600 EX RT isn't cheap, but nor is a 580EX2 and pocketwizards to run it wireless, so it really comes down to a debate on the merits of each.

600EX is the way of the future. I wouldn't even consider a 580 at this point.

No brainer! Canon 600ex-rt for the win! There's too many misfire and range problem with the 580ex2 and pocket wizard FlexTT5 and MinTT1. If you shoot for the plus III or X and 580ex it's almost the same price as the 600ex.

the 600 on a TT5 has been solid for me!
off-season plan is to replace all 430 flashes with 600s
and I can run those on their own, or with the TT5s when I need to combine them with the Bees...

Sounds like the 600EX rt is the way to go! Thanks for your input all!

I used PW ControlTL for at least two years before the 600EX-RT became available.
I found that they worked well with Nissin Di866 speedlites on the FlexTT5s and a 580EXII on the Mini on camera.

What most people forget, or disregard, is that the ControlTL firmware sits between the camera and the speedlites. The features available are dependent on the firmware. For the most part that's not a problem because they have implemented the Canon ETTL features.

That also means that the capabilities are limited by the ControlTL. i.e. putting a 600EX-RT on the flex turns it into a 580EXII.

A 7D does not take full advantage of 600EX-RT capabilities.

Given what has evolved in ETTL triggers over the past couple of years, I'd suggest looking at YN-622 triggers until you have a camera that fully supports the 600EX-RT's capabilities. They are much less expensive than the Pocket Wizards and work better, in my opinion.
Youngnou has recently announced a YN-622 trigger with LCD screen for controlling the system without having to go into the camera speedlite menu.

dmward an interesting view and a very valid one with regard to the firmwire - it is a shame that Canon forces updates upon us by limiting their firmwire support so strongly (esp as Canon doesn't even have another crop sensor flagship camera body out at yet).

Still it would seem that long term I'd be paying more to go with basic triggers and flashes and then to upgrade when I upgrade the camera body.

There are numerous models of the Pocket Wizards, all with a radically different feature set.

I suggest you first declare which model of Pocket Wizard you have interest in.

Enjoy! Lon

Good question, honestly I hadn't given it too much thought as to which specific product option in their range; although the PWIII would be a likely choice.

I like the 600RT’s but like the control of the flex units on both the 580ex2’s and the alienBees so I can take advantage of both flash units one controller.

There is absolutely no similarity between PW-III --an x-xync fire only trigger-- and a 600EX-RT speedlite with radio remote built in for complete ETTL feature set control.

The PW-III is more comparable to a YN-603. Of the two I bought the 603 since it does the x-xync triggering, wakes up the remote flash (something the PW-III can't do) and is much less expensive. Smaller too.

Apples and oranges. Now, if you plan on ControlTL, then my earlier comments are valid.

Can the 600 EX be controlled by the camera, say the 5D Mk3, while using a Profoto air remote on camera to control a set of D1 Air mono's?

600EX-RT or STE3 have to be in the hot shoe for any ETTL function. If the air remote is in the hot shoe then there is no way to control the 600EX-RT.
