I have done some searching for a solution to my problem but so far no success.

On Aug 18 the last photo taken had the file number IMG_9992.CR2. On Aug 24 the first photo taken had the file number IMG_0001.CR2. I happen to notice the discrepancy today after taking about 100 photos.

I did not change anything, did not format or change by CF card, did not re-charge the battery. What could have gone wrong?

(My file numbering is set to continuous since the day I bought the camera over 2 years ago.)

After 9999 is reached the counter starts at 0001 again when you have numbering on "continuous".

Thanks for the response. What would the difference be if it was set on Auto or Manual Reset?

According to the manual: Auto reset = the file number starts at 0001 each time the card is exchanged or a new folder created.
Manual: when you decide to reset the numbering.

But in all cases the Exif specification has four digits for the file number. So each time you reach 9999 it will roll over and start from 0001 again.
To make the files individual you have to add the folder number to the file name. So that IMG_1234 in the folder \DCIM\102CANON becomes 102IMG_1234 (or however you want to merge the data - perhaps IMG_1021234), to be able to tell the difference compared to the file IMG_1234 in the 103CANON folder.

However, what is your problem? You stated that you researched a solution to your problem. I'm not sure what the problem is? This is a characteristic of all digital image file naming, but what's your problem?

Perhaps this is the problem (missing file 9993 through 9999):

I think my T2i also skips a few numbers when stored for some X days. I only have 1 SD card. No one else uses my camera but me. Not sure if this is the cause but I remove the battery when it's stored.

The discrepancy of the missing numbers is more than likely due to deleted images.

I'm completely in agreement with this.

Thanks for all the brilliant responses and shame on me for not applying a little common sense. I read most of the manual 2 years ago, I have used the camera for about 30 months and I should have realized what Henk said and Anders re-stated:

"But in all cases the Exif specification has four digits for the file number. So each time you reach 9999 it will roll over and start from 0001 again."

As Phil pointed out I deleted some images.

Somehow I thought I used a digital camera that had 5 digits but I may have been mistaken. Man, I feel dumb. :(
