430EX Master and 420EX Slave

I currently own a 420EX which I find to be very limiting due to its lack of manual settings. It automatically determines the amount of flash power to use, which is fine sometimes but definitely not always (I find it particularly bad at fill-in flash).

I was thinking about getting a 430EX flash. Here are my questions:

  1. Will I be able to use the 430EX as master, and the 420EX as slave?
  2. If I set the power manually on the 430EX, how much power will the slave (420EX) use? Will I able to control that from the master?
  3. Is there an inexpensive trigger that works well with E-TTL for off-camera work with the two flashes?

Thank you in advance for your clarifications,
Tony

  1. Although the 430 EX and 430 EX II can work as slaves in Canon's remote flash system, they can't be masters.
  2. Even if you put a 580 EX II (for example) on the camera as a master, then you can't set the 420 EX manually from the master. It just doesn't support that. But you can adjust the E-TTL II exposure level from the master.
  3. Triggers supporting E-TTL properly have a tendency not to be cheap at the same time.
Now when the 600 EX-RT was introduced, more than just me bought a few, instead of using the 580 EX II we had prior to this. So there are a number of 580 EX II flashes around, units which see little or no use. Some of these are for sale for reasonable amounts. That's perhaps the best solution. You can use that as a master and the 420 EX as a slave, still not in manual, but you can at least set FEC on the slave, and/or a ratio compared to the master.

If you have a camera with a flash control menu (40D or newer), the Yongnuo YN-622C triggers will work in E-TTL with the 420EX and 430EX. Manual settings can also be made on the 430EX itself, just not remotely. See CliveyBoy's guide in his signature for compatible cameras and flashes.
