One of my neighbors girls signed up for a high school photo class, camera requirement is digital P&S.

Anyone have experience with students and cameras? Any advice on a good low priced camera to start with?

I thought maybe the Canon A series or Elph 115 might be a good starter, but I'm not sure.

Thanks so much.

The A1400 actually has an optical viewfinder, which is handy in both bright and low light, and uses AA cells. Both of those are nice-to-haves in my book. Might ask if the teacher has any other requirements beyond "digital P&S". Might want remote trigger (self-portraits, for instance) or low shutter-lag, which might limit the field (or at least call for some creativity on the part of the user).

something with manual modes like a SX160 camera. SX160 also runs on AA batteries.
I would skip the Elph series or the A series as it doesnt offer much beyond auto and program mode.

Thanks I've passed these on the family. They ordered the SX160, thanks again.
