Anyone have any candid opinions on this?

Also, since I can't post in buy/sell yet... Someone sell me one.

I love my drain pipe. I didn't think I had much use for it initially as I do mostly indoor shooting at church events (not weddings). But as a lark, I put it on my 5D3 this past March and was blown away at the results! Drop dead gorgeous! Right up there with my 135 f2L! My only complaint is that the IS is a bit noisy...makes a single click when it locks in...so what.

I found mine on ebay about 18 months ago from a Japan based store. They had a rating in the 10,000s and the pictures of the lens showed it was barely used. No scratches, no dings, and even the contacts showed very little wear. I paid $750 buy-it-now and it was at my door in New England USA 2 days later.

edit: I forgot to mention...my primary reason for buying it over one of the 70-200 Ls was price and f2.8. The other is it's black. I just can't reconcile myself to advertising 'very expensive lens' if I don't have to.

There is no IS system in the ef 80-200 2.8L
However, has an older USM motor version, so a little more squeals and squicks than the modern counterpart version.

Can't use Canon extenders, but third party one's are ok, with the obvious IQ loss.

I had one for probably 10 years, it was my first L lens, I found it to be mostly excellent. It's not quite up to the standard of the 70-200 II but it's a fine lens. I never found the older arc motor to be a problem. If you can find one at a decent price, go for it. KEH is a good source.

Where did you pick yours up from? Clean copies are hard to come by.

I sold mine...regretted it and recently bought another.

FM, craigslist, here, ebay are all good sources. Quality control was good back then so samples tended to be all good. Its more about getting the accessories with it ie tripod clamp and hood.

Here's a recently added auction for example: http://www.ebay.com …enses&hash=item2c72212513 (external link)

My like new one is in the mail! Also, I've tried to buy the lens on FM but that person is the least reliable person I've ever known when it comes to PMs.

I had this lens as well wish I had not sold it off it was tack sharp indeed. Will this lens work on the newer crop of DSLR's without issues?

I think this lens works on the new bodies with no issues. The only worry I would have with the drainpipe is that Canon no longer supports it. Then again, I am sure there are third party places that can repair or adjust the glass if needed. I just found out that my old 85L is in the same boat!!

Short answer: do it.

Unfortunately I already sold mine. But I I could go back in time I'd probably keep it.

I used mine last week and absolutely love this lens. Every time I use it I'm stunned and I just bought a 5Dc and they pair very nicely.

You're 100% right. There is no IS. My bad. It's the focusing motor that makes the click sound.
