Shot this young 'gator about a half-mile from my house, and the coloring is not photoshoped- its real:

His larger (but not orange) brother at yet another nearby lake:

Definitely shot these at the far end of the zoom lens... 300mm, but came within ten feet or so of the second one by accident. It was on the other side of a small hill and the path (on the other side of the lake at the time) went right behind him, if I knew I probably would have taken another route :D.

Oh and the day I shot these (about three days ago) was the first day that these surfaced from their winter hibernation.

I know they are tough beasts but I never thought I would see one rust... ;)

Nice captures

Thanks for the comments

stoneylonesome, Yes, I was lucky it was a warm day out. Seems it was more interested in sun-bathing than hunting- and yes, they can move VERY fast, even though you would not think so by looking at him. I felt much safer with a lake between us, so if he started moving, I would have time to get the heck out of there.

RichardtheSane, you may be more right than you know- I believe the 'gators get this color from a material in the mud they burry themselves in to hibernate during winter- when they surface in spring the material oxidizes, so they literally rust.

How 'bout one more from a long time ago, this is a scanned print (lost the neg. ) from my old AE-1 taken with a 150mm lens (I think) from a boat in the Okefenokee Swamp- one of my favorite film shots that I have ever taken, trust me- it does not look good here but...

I had shot two rolls of film- one on each half of the boat trip. The first had a whole lot a other 'gator shots, but the roll was lost in development (I forget where) and this is one of the only surviving good shot from the second roll.

Nice shots, could the orange color be from dried silt on his carcass?

Yes, probably- but the silt was not exactly that color. It did dry, and when it was exposed to the atmosphere, it rusted- at least acording to a few other locals (one of which lives right next to the lake and has found the animal sleeping on her driveway before :D ).

I think this explains why so many non-swimmers come the South-East.

Jonathan - Nice pics! #2 looks like he just ate a BIG meal! What lakes were they at?

Jerry ~ Baseball is a game where only defensive players handle the ball and offensive players who hit successfully in only one third of their at bats are among the best in the sport.

Well when you live on a resort island, within five minutes of a beach, you tend to not swim in lakes too much. :D

 Cool shots, especially the first one..

Thanks

These were just by some small local lakes on Hilton Head, the first one is the only one I know by name; Spring Lake.
