Who has experience with the basic non-IS Canon 70-200 f/4L shooting sports? More specifically, I need to shoot a 5K/10K run and am wondering if focus speed/tracking is up to the task. I will be shooting with a 5DMIII. Thanks!

Will be perfect. Very fast focus and excellent IQ. Can't go wrong.

It will do fine. However why are you asking when you have both a 70-300L and 135L? Both of those would do fine too.

I would say it depends on what you are shooting and what kind of light you'll get.

I also tend to find the 200mm is a bit shorter than I wished sometimes.

I would recommend a 70-200mm 2.8 as fast aperture is important for sports given the shutter speed requires. Some games occur at night and with an extender you'd still retain a useful aperture.
IS does not matter at all however, as sports needs to be shot at about 1/1000.

Ditto. The 70-300L is an awesome sports lens.

I used to shoot high school sports with 70-200 f/4 non-IS 5 years ago. It's very good for outdoor where light is plenty, on broad daylight, you could get f/5.6 and shutter over 1/320. Speaking of the Focal Lenght, it is sometimes too short for football, unless you got a good spot. I use it for indoor badminton as well, where I had to use ISO3200 and shutter about 1/200, so it wont't be suitable for indoor. If you are shooting indoor or at night, I think 135L would be more suitable.

I just finished my daughters U8 soccer season using the 70-200F4 with a 1.4 converter and it was great! Got some great shots, focus is fast, and when we had some evening games, I took off the converter and the F4 was fine.

I have used mine for shooting girls college soccer matches. The lens works quite well and I taken some very good actions shots over the couple of years I have had the lens.
