I currently have a 5d3 and a 5d2. I've been considering swapping out the 5d2 for the 70d, right about the same price. I don't use video much, based on what is known about the 70d what do ya'll see as the pros/cons of such a switch?

For the record, I mainly shoot family stuff, portraits for friends, some events for work, all non paid stuff. Like many, one day I could see myself supplementing my income with photography but not even close to making that leap so I don't know that I need a full frame body as a 'backup'. Currently I'm rarely using the 5d2.

If you don't do video, there is no reason to buy a 70D. Get the 60D for 1/2 the cost. The 60D's AF system puts the 5DII to shame.

Dedicated APS-c shooter. Gripped 60D, 60 2.8, 10-22, 15-85, Σ70-200 OS and a big white something or other! Plus a 5D w/28-75.

I don't think any of those features are of much use on a backup body that hardly gets used.

That's why I think I may use it more than the 5d2, plus the extra reach. Maybe it will get used more, just hate the fact my 5d2 is sitting there doing little but deprecating, no reasons to use it when I've got the 5d3 haha

The 7D is more ergonomically and functionally identical to the 5D3. Just a thought. Same AF modes, basic layout, settings, etc.

Touch screen is definitely cool though, the SL1 has it. I really like it.

I saw this if I was looking at a 7d... considered it for awhile, but I don't know that the 7d really gives me enough difference. However, I like the fact that the controls/layout are more similar. I just don't think the 7d would give me much the 5d3 doesn't outside of reach and a couple more FPS. The FPS may be a no issue as I don't usually shoot in burst.

So what exactly are you looking for then?

From what I can glean, is this a fair assessment?

  • You don't use the 5D2 due to how much better the 5D3 is, and the 5D2 just sits around.
  • You want to swap out the 5D2 for a crop body.
  • Presumably you want a crop body because it will give your lenses new "life", ie the crop gives you that "reach".
  • The 7D, being nearly identical to the 5D3, doesn't have enough frills, regardless of the fact that it is much cheaper than the 70D, but you aren't really sure you will use the 70D's most redeeming feature, and that is the dual pixel AF during liveview and movie mode?
  • You really want new features like wifi and touchscreen, because that will make you want to use the crop body more than you use the 5D2?

If you want more user features than similar ergos and function and you want a crop body, then yes, the 70D is a good option presumably. If you want 2 cameras that operate pretty similarly and each one can use your lens lineup a bit differently and you don't need the frills, then the 7D is a good option. If you don't need the 2 to operate similarly and you don't need the frills, then the 60D/T5i/T4i, etc are all options.

I think your assessment is fair!

It sounds all over the place, which is usually how my mind processes go, except for the one thing about the point about not using the dual pixel AF. I don't shoot much video today, short clips here and there. I take time and am thoughtful about my still photography. However, when I want to capture video... I just want a little less thought a little more auto (at least right now), and I think the 70d may give me that, and incentivize me to increase my repertoire.

The 5d3 may expect to much of as a videographer. It's beyond my skills as a photographer in that it's capable of much more than me, but at least there I am comfortable with all the control I have after 15 years of using slr's.

So _in my mind_ I may be more likely to pick up the 70d and actually go out and get better at shooting video, maybe even to the point where I get more comfortable with it, learning all the nuances and being able to think more about the shot, than simply what I want in focus and trying to keep in it focus myself. Lowering the barriers to entry....

Or maybe it's just my GAS creeping up again! ARGH!

I think you've rationalized your way into a 70D rather nicely. The logic absolutely works for me.

I am debating maybe picking up an 18-55 STM at some point just for video.

I never used my 60D for video unless I had to. The manual focus, even with FTM lenses, was just too much of a pain. I would use my S100 or an ancient Sony Camcorder instead.

After last night when I got my 70D, my entire world has been turned around. The dual pixel AF lives up to the hype. Tap the screen, it locks the target, and it sticks to it, even in horrible light. The traditional phase detect isn't too shabby either (although not like the 5D3 focus). The flippy screen and dual pixel AF means this thing is a video powerhouse, and the 19pt AF means it can do viewfinder stills with all of the features you would want too. So far I am very impressed by the thing.

I am a hobbyist, mostly taking pics of things that fit my fancy and my kids, and I have noticed that I am not taking as many videos of them mostly because I'm busy using my SLR for stills...now I think that is going to change. Stills are great for capturing a moment, but video captures it's own special things too. Now I am planning on doing a lot more of both.
