I' d want 2.8 and more reach. 24 is pretty wide.

Now that I've given an honest answer, how does someone with ~10 grand worth of equipment come to ask what gear to use?

I did want to be so blunt, or presumptuous.

Could be that daren is bored and looking for conversation.

yeah..kind of bored.....I just acquired the 1D ... correct statement..gear is not sign of experience :) amateur finally able to acquire some decent equipment on the used market.... am leaning toward 1D with 17-40 due to the crop factor or 5D with 24=70 for lesser weight to carry around

I would take the 5d, 17-40, 24-70 and a flash.

Congrats on the new 1DIII.

A 1.3 crop will give you about 31 from the 24-70 that's a good "street" focal length. For me, the equivalent of 52 for the 40 end of the other would be too limiting vs 91 for the 24-70.

If you are shooting at in the evening or night (that's what people do there right? :D) the 2.8 will make a big difference.

You'll definitely want the wide angle too. But as a walk around...

Cheers!

the answer for the 1d is there are no best choices because no short zooms were designed for that camera. if I had to choose one lens it would be the 16-35L II or you could learn to walk around with two lenses.

I went earlier this year and all I used was a Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 nonVC on a 60D, no flash, no filters, etc..

I did have a 55-250 in my bag but never used it.

If I went again with a FF I'd probably just take something general (40 or 50) and something wide (24 or 28). That's it.

In a bright city like vegas i dont think you need a flash. Id surely take a wide lens for the squares in vegas and something more general. What about adding the 40mm pancake. Will give you a very nice FOV on your 1D

When I was in vegas, I had a sigma 30mm on a 50d. Way too long for vegas.

24-105 or a 17/40 on a ff is far better.

When I was last there, I never wanted for anything longer than my 17-40 used on my 5d. Great for getting shots of the strip and even inside the casinos where there was crappy light--albeit the 5d3 has better iso than the older 1 series...
