Anyone disappointed with the G1X?

I have been using my G1X on vacation and have to say I am a little disappointed. Although I did know about the lack of incredible Macro capabilities of earlier G cameras, I never thought I would miss it as much as I have been missing it! Also I feel that the camera is not wide enough as I find myself constantly having to back off to take pictures that on my other G cameras (or S100) would not have to. Also the pictures don't seem to be that much of an advantage over the much smaller sensors on previous cameras and the AF is just plain SLOW and it is hard to get a crisp picture, especially in lower light. Maybe I have been spoiled by the 5DIII (using it a lot prior to this trip), but somehow I expected more from the much larger sensor. At this form factor I am beginning to think that a G15 or a G16 is simply a better bet in a much smaller package to boot.

Aren't all G's 28mm equivalent so they'd all be identical on the wide end with just the S100 at 24mm equivalent being any wider? I've been debating G1X/G15/G16 recently and leaning toward the 16 for the advances in AF etc..

only time I was frustrated was when trying to shoot fashion models on the runway
the low light and moving objects made for a frustrating night of missed shots.
but with immobile targets, I've been very pleased and have even stretched
iso to 6400 with confidence ... like in the shot below

My DSLR is a 5DMII which I love. I recently bought the G1X for vacation overseas next month. In testing it I'm super impressed with image quality. No, it's not my 5DMII. No, it doesn't have good macro and it's definitely not a good choice for fast shooting situations. For landscape and travel I think it's difficult to beat as it's far more portable than a DSLR. It's not perfect but no camera is or ever will be. I bought it for portability and image quality and it delivers both with flying colors.

I am just an amature but love taking pictures in natural light or low light. I had my G9 for several years and was very happy but it's low light performance was not good enough so when I read reviews on the G1X I bought one.

I took some test shots with the G9 and then with the G1X and the test shots that were in very low light lost all definition in the shadows with the G9 but the same shot with the G1X was sharp and clear.

Also I find I can crop closer or enlarge certain areas of a photo taken with the G1X and still have a presentable picture where I could not with the G9. I still have the G9 and use it for a second camera. I like to hand it to a friend or helper and ask them to take some extra shots with it while I use the G1X.

G1x is like your 40D with a 17-85, or even your 5DII with a 24-105 (just starting at 28mm), as far as IQ goes, but in a much smaller package. Yes, AF is quite slow, but useable.

I am surprised that all the G cameras have the same starting zoom at 28mm, I somehow felt with the G1X it was not wide enough and I have to move further back. I have to try out the HDR as it looks really nice and natural, I usually do HDR with 3 bracketed shots and process it on a PC ... but it can be laborious if things are not perfectly lined up or still. If the G16 has some of the new improvements in AF as the 70D, then it would be a no brainer choice. A picture in perfect focus will trump almost anything, including a bigger sensor. I found that out when I moved to a 5DIII. I wonder if the G1X is a one off camera or if there will be a new version. A 24mm starting zoom with super fast and sharp AF would really make that big sensor shine. Add to that 1080p at 60fps and you have something irresistible even without the Macro capability.

I love my G1X, but I think it's a one off just like the Pro1 unfortunately.

I know what you mean, but from the start my plan was to use the G1X for travel, and particularly for the big picture shots that I might want to enlarge and have printed.

So the plan is to dig out the G1X, in the same way that I used to dig out the DSLR from the motorcycle luggage, and put the point and shoot to one side.

Like this shot, not brilliant but with the swivel screen it allows you to hold the camera way above eye level and still get the shot level using the camera's built in electronic level. Also used in this shot is the built in ND Filter.

So on the whole happy with the camera, but would not go on vacation with the just the G1X as I think there are some gaps in its abilities (IMHO).

I think its just a matter of knowing its limitations and adjust to its other capabilties. You have similar gear to myself the 5D mk 111 and 100mm macro should be used 99% of the time.
When I use the G1x I slow down my photography technique, working a composition is slower, sometimes I don,t bother with AF and go manual especially in low light.
The format and wide angle is the nature of the beast the optical optimum will always be a problem to maintain IQ.

As long as you have a backup G12, G15, G16 etc you will be fine.

Yes, to a certain extent. It trails behind the state-of-the-art in large sensor, fixed and interchangeable lens compacts (Micro 4/3) in a lot of areas, but is still a worthy and unique offering in this field.

despite the noted issues with the camera - notably the lacking of a competent macro facility - I think this is an excellent pocketable camera, ideal for those situations where all your kit is overkill. Like all things it takes a little experimentation to determine the best solutions to a given scenario, my copy seems nice & sharp fwiw.

Yeah I think I just set the bar too high, I was hoping I would be able to get close to my 5DIII without me having to lug a bunch of heavy equipment. Well for sure that did not happen, and personally I think it is just a little better than the smaller G series cameras. Going on vacation on these new budget airlines such as Easyjet really makes you want to pack light, but I guess you simply can't cut shortcuts and expect results. One thing I noticed is that the new smart phone cameras and compact cameras are getting very close in performance, especially in good light ... but the gap to reach a good DSLR is still pretty huge. But somehow I still think with such a huge sensor as the G1X, Canon can build something really impressive that would make the compact to DSLR gap much smaller. Maybe the G1X2 ??
