ive been using the same CF card for the last, well since i got my 5D3...

i didnt get it downloaded before running off to shoot more images and my wife filled it up. i put my 2nd CF card in and started shooting. the numbering went from the 3-4 thousand range to 0100 and up...

i thought the camera kept the numbering according to how it was set in the menu. or is there a second setting that says to restart at the beginning if you change cards?

ive formatted them a couple of times (after transferring to my computer) so im a bit surprised that this has occurred...

You must have inadvertently changed your menu settings without realizing it.

I think there's a setting to tell the camera to start over on numbering with each new memory card,
or just tell it to keep numbering regardless of the cards.

It must be there, because I haven't ever reset my numbering, and I've been through four EOS cameras.

okay...

i just looked at the settings on my camera....

it is currently set to: Continuous for numbering...

there is a reset manually and a reset automatically. neither of them are selected...

im wondering if i reformat both cards on my computer, and then in the camera if it will make a difference...

thanks guys

Reset Manually doesn't remain set after you select it. It resets the frame number to 0001 (or the current highest number on the card, if you haven't cleared it) when selected.

According to p. 156 of the user manual,
"Continuous continues the file numbering sequence even after the card is replaced or a new folder is created. Even after you replace the card, create a folder, or switch the target card, the file numbering continues in sequence up to 9999 for the images saved. ...If the replacement card or existing folder already contains images recorded previously, the file numbering of the new images may continue from the file numbering of the existing images in the card or folder. If you want to use continuous file number, you should use a newly-formatted card each time."

In my experience, the camera only adopts the number from a card if the card has a higher last frame number than the camera's internal record suggests.

Try reformatting in the computer; if you reformat in the camera, the camera still knows what the last card number was.

i reformatted in camera and no luck...

i reformatted on the computer and no luck...

i reformatted on the computer then in the camera and no luck...

my two cards have completely different file number 'start' locations....

one around 4,000-5,000 (now) and one at 756 or so...

i can live with it but its kind of strange with the camera set to continuous....

Sounds like there may be a hidden file on one or both of the cards. Are the folder numbers they use the same?

Just an aside; as manuals are available in PDF format, they can be saved to your smartphone. I've found this quite handy when using a new piece of equipment or exploring a new to me feature.
