I took the lens out today and did some shooting with it. It renders out of focus backgrounds much nicer than the old 35F2. Blobs of light are circles in the background. The lens is sharp, with fast AF in most light. It slows a bit in very low light, but it is still fast.

There is a comparison of the bokeh on The-Digital-Picture.com and the new 35/2 IS definitely has the best bokeh of them all, although the light blobs from the old 35/2 aren't so bad either. They look very clean, but yeah, they're not round and round *is* better looking, no doubt about that. :) The others all look awful I think, the 35L included.

FYI the 35/2 non IS with its 5 aperture blades is going to give a similar look because the aperture is fully retracted when shooting wide open.

Ed and ArtyH... thanks for all the info on the new 35mm f2. Back in June I predicted the price of the this lens would be $500 by the end of the year. As I recall, Ed thought it wouldn't go below $650. Well, we're presently at $599. We still have 3 1/2 months to go, and I still think we'll get to $500 by 12/31.

Sure, wide open. But on the street I will want a large DOF and so will want to stop down considerably and then the blobs wouldn't be round anymore...

I wish I could find an excuse to by one, but I just can't. 35-60mm is just not my sweet spot, although a 50mm f2 IS might do the trick, or even better an 85 f2 IS, or even, even better a 135 f2 IS.

....dreams of the 200 f2 IS.
