I'm a macro beginner and I'm looking for a bit of help in improving my work. Below are shots at three successively higher magnifications; the first two are full frame (no cropping), and the 3rd is heavily cropped. I estimate the fly is about 1-1.5 mm in length. All shots were taken with a 7D and 100mm 2.8L with tripod. No extension tubes and no artificial lighting. There was a slight breeze but I tried to hit the shutter during still moments and was hoping that 1/250s f/8 would be good enough to stop motion. Any tips for improving overall quality?

These look good for natural light shots.

Thanks for the responses, guys. I've only been using natural light so far, but I think I've reached a point where I'd like to start working with flash for more control. Will browse the "Talk About Macro" forum for ideas.

Cheers.

I like all the three pictures! the only thing I could think off that could have some improvement its the fly that could have some more light (shadows due to natural light).

The fill flash would help with that, or some kind of reflector if you want to keep it all natural.

Composition, DOF, detail, all perfect :)

Thanks, Warl0rd!

The other thing I'll do next time is calibrate the diopter on my camera. I keep forgetting to do that! Unfortunately, the sun was too bright for me to use LV for this set.
