HSS Banding/Clipping with 5D3 + PocketWizard ST4 + Flex TT5 + Ranger RX Speed?

Hi POTN,

So I've recently pulled the trigger on a PocketWizard ST4, FlexTT5 and a Ranger RX Speed with an S-Head, and I'm experiencing banding/clipping issues for anything beyond 1/250s.

I plug in my ST4 into my Ranger RX Speed, and I have the FlexTT5 attached to my 5D3. I have updated the firmware on FlexTT5 to version 6.400, and my ST4 to version 5.400.

I've tried playing with the settings via the PocketWizard utility, but have had no luck. My current settings are listed below.

Has anyone experienced such an issue? If so, how did you go about in fixing it to achieve a clean image with 1/8000? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

I take it to mean not getting a clean frame when shooting over xsync.

Correct!

After quite a bit of googling, I think I've found my answer from a previous thread:

You are losing exposure in that area as you increase the shutter speed, in perfect linear form with the shutter speeds. You lose 1 stop of exposure in that part of the frame as you go from 1/500 to 1/1000, and another quarter stop as you go to 1/1250. This matches exactly with what I posted in my earlier reply, pointing out that this method does not get you any additional ability to overpower ambient light.

Even if you were to use a longer duration flash to help even out the exposure over the frame, it's still going to have the same fundamental issue where faster shutter speeds will start robbing you of flash power in linear progression along with the ambient light, once you cross past the sync speed.

Seems like I forgot to correct my exposure when I was testing the different shutter speeds

Thank you POTN! :)

Does the ranger support HSS ?

If i recall correctly, its a "dumb" battery powered studio strobe, and doesnt play nice with HSS

The Hypersync setting may work to get you another stop or two over 1/250 but i dont think you can sync at 1/8000 with a ranger

I just tried to sync at 1/8000. Seems fine! I just had to bump the ISO a few stops :)

It's almost impossible to have a clean 1/8.000 photo.
The best way for your kit is put the TT5 only Hypersync, the ST4 in reduced clipping and the RX at full power and you get only a little ND soft grad filter effect, easely corrected in PS :)

Here you have one example and the RX S head do a better Hypersync work because they are a slower light head than the Einstein.

I've got a YN-622C and I get no banding on 1/8000.

Camera is 5D, triggers are Yongnuo YN-622C, strobe is a cheap chinese 300ws from ebay.

One YN-622C is on top of the 5D, another YN-622C connected to the studio strobe via PC sync to 3.5mm (an adapter is used to go from 3.5mm to 6.3mm)

The YN-622C automatically detects HSS once it's past 1/200 and you can still keep shooting without any black bars, previously I've only achieved 1/160 with Pocket Wizards Plus II's, but with the YN-622C, I've been able to sync at any shutter speed.

Excuse the pics, I just went to the back and shot at the first thing I could see haha

1/160 f2.0 ISO50 normally my maximum sync speed with studio strobes (external link)

1/8000 @ f2.0 ISO200 (external link)

As you can see, there are no clipping

I'm not sure if you can connect a normal PC sync cable to a ranger, but it might be worth a look at for less than 100 dollars, the ability to sync at 1/8000 would be very useful for those that want to shoot wide open during the day.

Wow, I made such an amateur mistake! I was judging the 'clean' image based on what i saw on my camera LCD. When I had imported it into lightroom, boy was I wrong!

Thank you for the info!

That's a beautiful shot! Did you have to use a ND filter?

I shoot with the Ranger RX AS Speed, S-head, 1DX, Mini TT1 and ST4 combo and have no problem shooting all the way to 1/8000th.

Here's an example (although I can't recall the setting on this exact shot, can check EXIF when I get home if anyone would like to know).
