Hi,

Not been on the forums for around a year as I have taken a break from my photography. Keen to get stuck into this again I need to get kitted up. To make things easier I have always had Canon (my last body was a 60d). The 70d is brand new and seems to be well received or there is the well established 7d. They are the same price and its a hard choice. I mainly like to shoot wildlife and Motorsport so I am not really interested in all the new video features on the 70D. I like the build quality of the 7d and its been around so long now you cant argue with the quality.

Has anyone else been looking at these two, if so what did you go for?

I am always worried about being an early adopter for any new technology, also you are paying a price that will soon fall. Warehouse Express have got the 7D for a touch over £1000 which seems a great price.

Thanks in advance.

Dave

I personally would go with the 7D for the build quality. I think the 70D is plastic.

That was my worry. I guess when they get round to brining out a 7D mk2 its going to be very expensive and out of my price range so its an opportunity to pick up a great camera at the lowest price possible.

For what you say you like to shoot, go with the 7D, and yes the 70D is a plastic body, just like what it's replacing, the 60D. Good luck with your choice

70D, it's plastic but plastic these days is very durable.

That was my worry. ...

Are you planning to photograph the wildlife or beat it senseless with the camera?

The 7D may have a slight advantage over the 70D in BIF due to the slightly more sophisticated AF system.

On the other hand, the 70D sports a newer sensor which appears to have very little noise and possibly a more forgiving AA filter than the 7D.

To be perfectly honest with you, if I were in your position and starting all over, I'd go for a 60D and load up more good glass.

If you can wait for a few weeks for the reports to come in, the combination of the 70D with the 18-135 STM and 55-250 MkII might be an extraordinary one.

Or a 70D/15-85/55-250 MkII

Or a 70D/17-55 f2.8/55-250 MkII

You pays your moneys and you takes your chances :D

If you're doing sports or fast-moving wildlife and not video, 7d seems to still be the best choice. Based on actual photos so far, the 70D does not seem to have a usable advantage over the 7D in terms of noise. This is what we should expect, since Canon is not going to undercut their more expensive FF bodies in terms of noise performance.

If you're really concerned about 7D noise, shoot RAW and post-process with a little care:

Search on Google for "cracked 5D body". The Google "cracked rebel body". I do find a few of both, but I think the idea that the magnesium bodies are much more durable is a myth. I would not let the build of the 70D stop you from buying it.

I really like the Liveview capabilities of the 70D, but after a lot of thought I think the missing AF modes (Single Point Expansion and Spot) are deal breakers for me. Unless I find users shooting sports successfully with the 70D (and saying it works just as well for them as the 7D) I will not be "upgrading." That said the 70D looks like a great all-purpose APS-C camera.

7D - no doubt.

The only really good, new, thing about the 7D is the AF for video. For fast-moving things like wildlife and sports you still can't beat the AF of the 7D on an APS-C.

Add my vote for the 7D . Upgraded from a T3i for a more durable shutter, put just shy of 50000 shutter cycles on it since May, works to perfection, fantastic battery life , all round stellar performer. In use pretty much 8 hours a day, indoors and outdoors, hasn't given me a single problem.

Never used the 70D and don't know enough about it to comment, but would recommend the 7D to anyone.

If I was buying now, I would still buy the 7D. I would buy it refurbished from Canon on the Canon Loyalty program. You can get it that way for about $900.

Just bought a 60d to go with my T3i. Love it. Love both of them.

7D for about $900 or so through CLP or a refurb sale is a nobrainer - that's what I did last year... picked up a refurb 7D with 140 clicks on it for $925. Love it!

The 7D body is a better build quality than the 5DII, so searching "cracked 5D body" is irrelevant. Watch this video to see how much of a beast the 7D is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RCT-YMgjm9k (external link). They throw it down steps, freeze water inside of it. Light it on fire. And it still works.

I was debating the exact same thing as as I have no interest in video and want a good sports capable camera I chose the 7D. It ended up being about $300 cheaper than a 70D as well.
