the times we've been at Yosemite, we've usually stayed Curry Village, and then driven or hiked from there. I wouldn't say we've strayed too far from the standard hiking trails though.
I know what you mean about trying to avoid the typical touristy shots. That's part of the challenge of Yosemite for me. sometimes just changing the angles or composition can a bit can be enough to breathe new life into the well-known views. waiting for the right lighting can also make a difference.
