Why can't I do simple things like render 1:1 previews and group photos in the develop module? Why do I have to switch back to the library module just to do that? I have little reason to ever be in the library module except to do these few things. I spend most of my time in develop, as it is easy to move from one photo to the next, pick/rate/flag, and of course edit.

LR 4.4 on Windows.
C'mon Adobe - just let me do it all in develop!

How do you mean group photos? You can select more than one photo to work on in the develop module.

Well, lets see. The basic concept, a database/catalog based photo files management system integrated with a cutting edge Raw converter was conceived in 2002/3, call it ten years ago, and most of the code was written in 2004/5 with betas in 2006. 1.0 at the beginning of 2007 and four new editions since then that have added more features and improved old ones, but remained faithful to Mark Hamburg's original vision. I have no idea how many copies sold - a lot apparently because every poll shows LR as second only to her sister ACR. So, despite the huge success of the program, there is a very high probability that Adobe will abandon that winning formula just as soon as you send your constructive suggestions to the appropriate site, http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family (external link)

Why can't I do simple things like render 1:1 previews ...

Have you tried clicking in the the image display area or using the space bar? Works for me.

I have little reason to ever be in the library module

So you have little reason to need 1:1 library previews.

... and group photos in the develop module

I don't understand. How do you want to group them? Into batches for batch editing or batch printing? How about selecting them in the film strip in the bottom panel? Grouping them into collections? What does that have to do with developing? Why should it be in Develop?

I have to confess. I lied before. There is no chance that Adobe will completely remake the application for your convenience. Learn to work in the existing arrangement, including the shortcuts that make movement between the modules very fast, or move on to a program that suits you better. There are quite a few in the market, although they don't sell very well.

Heh! Like Elie says, press the space bar, or just click on the pic to go from "regular" view to either 1:1 view or whatever magnification you have chosen (an option that you would choose in the Library module). If you don't want to be bothered to click "e" to go to the Library module to, say, change that magnification setting (or do other things) well, then...

Oh, and in either the Develop or Library module you can cycle through different magnifications using Ctl/Cmd + and Ctl/Cmd -!

(an option that you would choose in the Library module)

That can be done without leaving Develop, either in the Tool Bar at the bottom of the screen (hot key "T") or in the navigation window at the top of the left side panel (hot key F7).

Also, I have the impression that the OP does not understand what "Render 1:1 Previews" means and does and that I was too curt and cynical in my reply. So here is a fuller explanation: Normally, LR creates only screen sized previews for use in the Library module (in Preferences you should set the preview size to be close to your monitor resolution). However, if commanded to do so it will also create full resolution (1:1) previews, stored in the Previews.lrdat folder next to the catalog file. These are only used in the Library/Loupe View (hot key "E") if and when you zoom in to the image. For the Develop module an entirely different preview is created in the Camera Raw Cache folder which at 1:1 may be high res but is not full res in the sense of using the entire native image, because it is a preview of only that portion of the image which is on-screen. Thus, you need to use the command Render 1:1 Previews only if you are planning to view your images at 100% zoom in the Library.

You can render 1:1 previews in the Develop module. Press the space bar, press the letter Z, click on the picture with the magnifying glass, or use the links above the navigator in the left panel.

I don't understand why stacking isn't available in the Develop module, especially since that keyboard shortcut isn't used for any other function. It's easy enough to quickly switch to the Library module and back once you accept that there's no other way around it.

Select the images you want to stack, press G to go back to Library grid view, CTRL+G to stack them, then D to go right back where you were in the Develop module. It's a slight inconvenience, but in reality only takes 2 keystrokes and 3 seconds longer than if you could do it in the Develop module.

Thanks, I was talking about stacking and accidentally referred to it as grouping.

As for rendering 1:1 previews, I did not know that LR did different previews for library and develop. I disliked waiting for a full resolution preview to render on an individual image when I zoom in for detail work in the develop module, and preferred rending 1:1 images after importing and discarding rejected images as a batch. Apparently this wasn't doing anything for me?
