Wasn't this lens "just" released 5 years ago (in telephoto "L" world, 5 years is like 5 seconds in human world!:))? Does it even make sense for them to release a new version so soon? I'm guessing if they release a MK2 for this lens, they may do the same for 200L F2.0 as well since they were both released together.

It will be interesting to see if it materializes.
It would help the value of my existing 800.

It's rated CR2, meaning it's meaningless.

Oops. For some reason I thought the current one was already priced at 16K...but I see it's 'only' 14K. So my guess is Canon will make it a little more than Nikon made theirs. And "a little more" could mean 1-2K. Presumably the new one will get the nice weight reduction like all the rest of the II's.

I had thought Canon effectively rendered the 800mm f/5.6L irrelevant by doing such a great job with the 600mm II. The 600 II + 1.4x III is an 840mm f/5.6. So, what is to be gained by an 800mm II lens? It might be a little less heavy and a wee bit sharper (than 600mm + 1.4x) I suppose, but it still makes me wonder. The 600 II offers more reach and flexibility when AF limitations are considered (600mm, 840mm, and 1200mm).

They could add a 1.4TC built in... charge another 4k for that ;)

Despite the fact that there hasn't been one since FD, I always considered the 800mm IS to be the first 3rd generation EF Super telephoto. ie: it' doesn't have a MkII on it because it had no EF predecessor, but it kicked off the 3rd generation along with the 70-200mm IS MkII.

I think this is an unlikely rumor...

On the other hand, as soon as the 600mm IS II was launched, sales for the 800mm dropped as the 600mm with 1.4x t-Con is optically equal to the 800mm.

I don't believe this is happening. Low-volume lens that is fairly new. I have used it and it was much sharper than the 600 Mark I.

Along with the rest of their stuff.

None, really. I don't pay much attention to CR. I've seen plenty of CR5s (the one they pretty much consider to be a done deal) go nowhere.
