Im moving to a more urban area, I will be living in a apartment, that is a tower as oppose to the town house I was living in. The tower has 22 floors, break ins aren't likely but I just want to be as careful as possible. Obviously I'll have renters insurance, and I dont have any super professiona gear but everything I have has been hard to obtain and has costed a nice chunk of my money. CUrrently I shoot as a hobby, but I do want to go pro sometime next year. If I had to guess how much I spent I would say under 10K, maybe around 6 or 7, at what point is it worth it to insure your gear??

My renter's insurance covers my camera gear so long as its not used professionally. Its worth it to insure when replacing it yourself would be painful financially.

Look at limits on items and collections, you may need to specify expensive equipment on your policy. As soon as you sell any image for any money you can be classed as professional and denied cover, so be careful - suggest full disclosure to your insurance company.

Also be carefull on what they cover and where they cover. I've seen some policies might cover lets say 5k or whatever but the moment the gear is taken out of the house they might only cover 2k of your gear. The other thing I've seen is while you might have 30k in renters insurance they might limit how much they cover for certain electronics, or used in a professional setting.

as far as if it is worth it. I would say so. Pay 500 a year for a commercial policy and it covers almost 8k in gear. It's nice knowing I have that peace of mind for if Ah snivel snot happens

Yup. In my area with one company the difference between normal insurance coverage and business/commercial coverage is $80/month for normal vs. up to $800/month for commercial.

$80 is basic. If you want the all-inclusive non-commercial coverage, I've been quoted as much as $150/month.

I went with a "personal article" policy through my normal home owners insurance. Monthly amount came out to $17 non-professional as I am not full-time nor have any piece of gear considered "professional grade", i.e. 1Dx > $5K in value. Professional would be $24. That is with zero deductible and full replacement value.

Check around.
