Over at dxomark, there's a comment in the 70D sensor review
that Canon will not release another 7D, with the 70D being it's replacement. Did anybody hear anything about this?

Over in Nikonland, they don't seem in any great hurry to release a D400, rather they released the D7100 which feels like a replacement to the D300s mostly. It seems a little high spec'd to be in the D7000 line, but if the major manufacturers were cutting down camera lines, that would make a little sense.

JarvisCreativeStudios Goldmember More info | Sep 04, 2013 17:54 | #6 Why would they replace a camera with a worse camera? From what I've heard the 70D only surpasses the 7D in video. Build quality and fps are very important to wildlife and sports shooters, which a lot of 7D users are. The 7D will live again! WEBSITE

As Canon has pretty much topped out on sensor performance, that is that nearly all their cameras deliver the same image quality, all they have left to differentiate the bodies is features. So what the heck do they put into the new 7D that the 70D doesn't already have? Turn on the two focus modes they crippled in the 70D? another processor for a few extra FPS? Take away the tilt screen and make it full magnesium to appeal to the tank people? There is not much they have to play with. The 7DII if it happens needs to be a quantum step camera with a revolutionary new sensor. Maybe based on foveon or black silicone but something that resets the bar way up there. Not sure why, but call me JJ.

I'm looking at the 7D II as my next camera after my 20D and 40D. I was disappointed with the dumbed down 60D. The 70D is better, but just doesn't make the cut. I don't do video, which seems to be its most remarkable improvement. The 7DI or II would be a nice upgrade to us current 40D users since we're used to the mag alloy body and fast fps. I don't know why they dumbed down the features on the 50 and 60D (and even the build on the 70D still. and it gets .5 second faster fps lol). Probably so their wouldn't be too much competition with their 1.6 flagship that they were releasing. WEBSITE

Point being, technology is always improving and I'm sure what they have in the lab right now is beyond what the 70D, 5DIII, or any other camera can do. Not saying it will be on the 7DII, but never think that the peak has been reached. WEBSITE

What i meant to say is that if the 7DII will be based on the same sensor tech as in the 50D, 500D, 550D, 7D, 600D, 650D, 60D, 700D, 70D it will be a massive disappointment to me at least. I'm not knocking the bodies, but there has been no noticeable improvement to image quality in quite some time. It's about time Canon wows us again. Not sure why, but call me JJ.
