Adobe just announced a $9.99 per month subscription for Photoshop & Lightroom on the cloud. At $20/mo it was reasonable, but not favorable. However, for $120 a year, I feel a little less annoyed not actually owning a piece of software.

I refuse to pay a monthly subscription for any software regardless who makes it or what it's for. Looks like I'll be stuck using LR4 soley as my only editing software or pick up a open source alternative.

I haven't heard anything saying that LR won't still be a purchasable item independent of CC (with purchasable updates). Hopefully that will remain; IMHO LR is a great value photo-editing program.

At that price, I am considering it. But would like to see what Aperture 4 (if it ever comes) brings to the table first.

As I upgrade lightroom every time it is upgraded, I could become comfortable with this price point. I have CS5 and didn't see the need to upgrade it but at $120 per year, I just might.

Third, you have to have bought Photoshop CS3 or later.

Well, that shuts out a lot of people. Seems like a strange stipulation. You'd think they would get more people signing up if there wasn't this restriction.

It's $10 a month until Adobe decides it's not and raises the price. At that point, if you don't continue to pay the (increased) monthly fee, you're likely screwed.

Good business plan! NOT!

Actually, this is quite clever of Adobe. Get those with newer versions of Photoshop (who are holding off changing to the cloud) with a good enticement.

Once they leave their old program behind, up the price in 12 months, and then they're either stuck having to work on the cloud, or drop back to older software they will then find limiting and may not open up some of their work anymore.

It doesn't solve any of the original problems for clients who haven't upgraded yet - just a nicer 'interum' pricetag incentive to try and get them to forget the other concerns they have.

If one was going to upgrade to the cloud - this would be a good opportunity, otherwise for others, the words of Admiral Ackbar ring in my ear.

I'm worried bout the price increase after 12/31. Seen a couple of stories announcing this, and they say the $9.99 is good forever, but until I see in an announcement from Adobe I won't believe its a forever deal.

Adobe can still pound sand, kick rocks, suck eggs and other crude things not fit for this forum. I want to buy the software and use it as I see fit with no strings attached. Not a single program I use or want to use pulls a stunt like Adobe is pulling.

Have a wheelie nice day!

can't imagine why they would make that stipulation?

To give a deal to people who have been loyal? After 12/31 they will likely increase the monthly price to maybe $14.99 per month without that requirement.

Also, anyone who is saying "I want to own software and not rent it!" You have two problems: 1. You don't own your current version of Photoshop, you merely paid for a license to use their software. 2. It comes down to price over the long run and which is cheaper for you personally depending on your usage. And yes, it will eventually lock people out who want to use older versions and pay less for it.

This could be good/bad either way. I don't see too much of a problem with this. I'd happily pay $9.99 per month for the latest versions of photoshop and lightroom (which is all that I use). I currently have Photoshop CS4 and would like to not pay $600+ for CS6 (or whatever new version is coming). It works out much cheaper for me. I'm not going to be using CS4 in 4 years from now...
